I have had a few people contact me with interest in my factory mounted side spare tire. So I decided to put a few things together in a thread for future interest.
My truck was a 5 window 3100 built in the first part of 1953 at the Oakland plant, it has a couple first time options RPO 341 and RPO 399 Tinted Glass. Seems that the pieces used on the side mounted spare were the same on 1/2,3/4 and 1 ton trucks, however the driver's side rear fender only has the indent on the shorter wheelbase 1/2 ton trucks. This configuration was a one year only and the pieces changed in 1954 because of a bed redesign, making this not a widely seen item these days.
I have included some earlier pictures of the side mount before disassembly and paint. The truck was painted one time before to a yellow color but the side mount was not disassembled as evidence of the original coppertone paint being visible on the backside of the supports. After paint it was assembled with all the original hardware. In 1/2 ton form the largest tire it will accommodate on a stock wheel is a 650 by 16.

Some more pics as finished, notice the piece of flat stock on the inside of the bed.Somehow the description does not match the picture, maybe an upload software problem or my user error.

I bought what I thought was the side mount assembly at a swap meet last fall, great price and smiling all the way home with my prized possession only to find out that mine was made for an eight hole wheel! Lucky for me I have a welder/fabricator friend who took it to work with him and did a "Government Job" on the triangle piece to make it fit the 6 hole lug pattern. Still keeping on the hunt for that piece that fits the top bed rail and attaches to the front bed metal.

There is not a tool made that if you don't try hard enough you can't break!
