I've got a '46 Panel with a SBC 350 and I hope someone else has done this before me. It's got the original radiator in it and I'm putting a 16" electric fan behind it. Has anyone built or know where I might find some kind of plans to build a shroud for it?

Thanks

David

I recently put a 283/TH350 in my 46 and used the original radiator. Mine is working good so far but the hot weather has not hit yet. I put the electric fan in front and used it as a pusher, no fan on the engine. Where are you going to put the shroud? Will you use the electric along with the engine fan?

My mechanical fan was sitting too low and not performing well enough ... I have a 350 sbc, too ... but didn't need a shroud with the electric fan I put in my truck.

If you're using a 16-inch fan, I suggest you use Two Relays -- See Here

I also believe in using a Fusible Link instead of a circuit breaker (and definitely NOT a fuse).

I'll be doing just exactly what Alan did with his. A 16" Zirgo 2700CFM high on the radiator as a puller. I've only got 4" of clearance between the end of the water pump shaft/pully and the radiator. With the fan in place I'll have about 1" to 1 1/2" clearance. I've always heard you need a shroud to get the full use out of the fan. And I'm looking very hard at the two relay set up also. Thanks Alan and Rick

Alan I do have one question. Why did you or the PO put the alt. on the passenger side and the AC on the drivers. I'm looking at setting it up just the opposite. I'm not sure if it makes any difference or not maybe someone will answer that too.

Hey, David

The PO did that arrangement with the AC and Alt ... I believe the Alt is always on the pass-side on a 350, but I'm guessing he set it up that way because the hoses from the AC condenser are on the driver-side and it just made more sense.

I doubt it makes any difference at all ... I'm sure it's just a matter of what makes sense to your setup.

I modified my radiator support and radiator, fab'd a shroud and went with a 17" mechanical fan blade. My thoughts were it would be one less electrical maint.load to worry about. You can lower the radiator about 2" and move forward by drilling the spot welds off the rad side mounts. You can see here

that was my solution. Zeke

From 1969 on, I believe, the alternator appeared on the passenger side of the engine. Up to 1968, it was on the driver's side.

You could use the earlier brackets and mount the alternator on the driver's side, right above the power steering pump, but you'll have to use a short water pump. The later style uses the long water pump.

Nice job on that 283. It appears that the top of the air filter comes up to about the top of the radiator. That's some excellent clearance below the hood. Looks to me like plenty of room for a roots blower.

The 350 that I am using for my 46 has factory ac and this is how it came ( alt on passanger side ). I am leary about using an electric fan so I moved my rad to the outside of the rad frame and lengthened the frame by about 4 inches so i could drop the rad down. This is on a 76 frame. There are a few pics in the smothie folder. Hope this helps
