Am in the process of arranging my pictures alphabetically an ran across a step by step pictorial on making a drivers door outside key lock. Need to know two things: is there any interest and what forum should I use; General, Doors, or Greasy Spoon? This set of pics has way more detail than one I previously put on the forum.
Evan, yes, please post it. Post it here in GTT and I will discuss it with the others Mods to see if it fits better somewhere else. This question comes up quite often so a pictorial would help tremendously. Thanks

Hey, Martin, These pictures won't come up in the "select images" option but they will from my computer library. I am REALLY dumb computer wise so if anyone with time on their hands and is computer wise I can email the photos to them and IF that person can move a pic from an email to the forum the problem is solved. I'm sure there is a way to transfer them from my library to the select image file but re-read the second sentence to see the problem. If anyone is willing to do this PM me their email and I will send them a test image. Thanks; Evan
Thanks Andy, I cannot get the pictures off my computer for email either so I put them on the screen and took a picture of them with my digital camera. Here is what one looks like:
Here are the images taken from the computer screen with a digital camera and they are lousy. Tomorrow I'm going to buy a thumb drive and if they will transfer to it I'll send the drive to Andy and then he can post good pics. The ones on the screen are crystal clear but had to tape over the flash to get any picture at all and this killed most of the detail. Anyway:
3/16 hole drilled in lower left corner of lock plate to install the locking tab actuated by the key Latch assembly is installed and a foot long 3/16 aircraft drill is used to drill through the inside panel, pass through the hole drilled in the latch plate and through the outside door skin; this aligns everything. Assembly is then removed from door.
Lock tab (white) is raised to the up (locked) position with key; this prevents the release latch arm (orange) from moving enough to lift out of the notches which releases the part of the door latch one can see from the outside.
One thing you will notice is the pointed end of the tear drop shaped base points the opposite direction of the lock on the passenger side but if you don't park in front of a mirror no one will know.
These "picture of a picture" are pretty bad but maybe Andy can save us.
Don’t give up Evan. You’ll get there and the information is valuable. PM HandyAndy and sort things out and give it another shot. I see a Tech Tip in your future. ThanksðŸ›

Evan, I'm sure you did a search of this site related to this project. But somewhere in the back of my 64 yo brain I remember this being done before. Maybe I can jar it loose. Great work! A lot of folks have wanted to do this... Thanks for sharing your ingenuity. That's one great thing about this "community" - folks sharing their knowledge and experience.
Frank, You remember right as I posted an abbreviated version on the Classic site and Tim moved it to Stovebolt for me so your brain is not mush yet. When I ran across the expanded version I TRIED to re-post it.
I did a search on SB and found these photos on another site. See the next post for the remainder of the photos.
-3/16 hole drilled in lower left corner of lock plate to install the locking tab actuated by the key. Latch assembly is installed and a foot long 3/16 aircraft drill is used to drill through the inside panel, pass through the hole drilled in the latch plate and through the outside door skin; this aligns everything. Assembly is then removed from door.
-Locking tab is brazed to a 10-32 slot head screw and slot is made wider for flattened shaft from key lock to seat into.
-Door handle is turned down to make sure latch releases.
-Lock tab (white) is raised to the up (locked) position with key; this prevents the release latch arm (orange) from moving enough to lift out of the notches which releases the part of the door latch one can see from the outside.
-The end of the lock shaft has been ground flat and the notch filed in the locking lever shaft so it's a snug fit. The 3/8 steel tubing captures the lock shaft so it can't slip out.

-Short capture tube is brazed on to keep key shaft in place.
-One thing you will notice is the pointed end of the tear drop shaped base points the opposite direction of the lock on the passenger side but if you don't park in front of a mirror no one will know. The reason for this is the customer wanted the pointed end of the teardrop shaped door lock to be facing back and the key to insert with the notches down just like the factory one on the passenger door.

Great work Andy. Clear photos now so interested ones can jump up to the funky ones for a text explanation. Couldn't have done it without your help. Thanks again; Evan
This post reminds me that the drivers door on my 54 Chev 2 ton don't have a key lock whereas the passenger does. The ignition key does work to lock the passenger side, IS THIS A NORMAL SET UP OR HAS SOMEONE CHANGED IT? If it's a factory setup why would they do it that way.
🛠Yes completely normal. Nice to know that the factory ign key still unlocks the passenger door.

All brands of trucks used to be like that. I believe the intent was so you would exit the vehicle on the curb side instead of into traffic. This has been discussed here numerous times over the years. A search should turn up lots of interesting reading.
While perusing some specification manuals on Keith Hardy's site I came across RPO 395: LH Door Lock Safety Equipment. At least for 1952-54. Maybe earlier, though I did not see it listed on 48-51 specs. I know some pages are missing from some of the scans he made.
I don't know if Keith is actively doing that now. His webpage shows last updated in May 2015. We should all appreciate his work in collecting and publishing this info. It's been invaluable to me a few times... Thanks Keith!
When the lock broke on my '47 1 ton truck, I looked closer and it was not right. I did some digging and it may have come from a '41 to '48 car driver side. Picture attached of the old, and replacement. The cover would swing up(it swung down on the passenger side of my truck), the shoulder to keep the cover open is correct, in fact the housing and everything is a mirror image. Now, does anybody know if the door latch mechanism from '41 to '48 car would work in our trucks?
