For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Nov 2018 Posts: 44 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2018 Posts: 44 | My 1949, 3100, 1/2 ton with 6 wheel studs is leaking oil at the rear brake attachments. Looking at the service manual, it appears that you have to remove the whole rear differential/axle/driveshaft assembly from the truck to install new seals. Is this what you have found? I am asking because if there is an easier way, I'd like to know!
Best regards,
Joe

What year manual, and what page (I'll look after I post this)?
You can remove the rear wheels, and then open the back of the rear end to allow removal of the axle shafts. Each seal can then be pulled/pried out.
If there are no seal-wear marks/grooves in/on the axle shafts, you can just replace the seals.
If there are grooves, you can install a "speedi-sleeve"for each side, available on-line and from good parts shops. Ask here for sources, if needed.
I'd suggest replacing the rear axle bearings during this operation. My experience has been: after replacing old bearings, the rear end/axles noise is reduced. | | | | | Joined: Nov 2018 Posts: 44 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Nov 2018 Posts: 44 | To Tclederman: Thank you, what a relief!
