To all of you AD truck owners. I think that we finally have the color that we have been looking for. I took my steering column into a very reputable auto paint store. We used the paint color that was under the column to dash clamp. I asked them to come up with a mix that was just a shade darker, than the one found under the clamp. Lets face it, the color has probably faded a little over the past 60 plus years. They specialize in BASF paints. They spent 5 days and some of my money to come up with a real nice match. Before I rushed to post it on Stovebolt, I sent the color formula and technical data sheet to Denny Graham. We all need to thank him for his efforts also. He drove a number of miles to have the color mixed. Then, he brought it home and sprayed a steering column. He agreed with me. The color is a real nice match. I am sure that he will post the picture, when he gets some time. I hope this will help all of you bolters that are trying to get that orignal color and look, for your AD truck. I know that is my goal. Good luck with your restorations.

Ok, been busy, and just getting around to posting the pictures
with labels and Steve's formula. I believe we have a winner
here. This is the closest match that I've seen so far and you
can take the fromula to a BASF paint dealer and have it mixed.
So now we have good repeatable formulas for the general
interior paint in a PPG formula and a formula for the mast
jacket/steering wheel/3sp shifter in a BASF paint.
Here are a half dozen pictures, step thru them to see the
comparison from a couple of different angles:

Thank you Rugo for completing the picture of the correct
interior colors.

Thanks Denny, for taking the time to spay a number of the colors that have been discussed on this site. I appreciate your time and efforts to do that and post all of the pictures of your findings.

Perfect timing just happen to have pulled the column yesterday and starting clean up to repaint. Thanks Denny and Rugo.

Glad we could help. I think you will really be happy with the color. It is a real nice match. I am digging the dump bed. That is really cool. I grew up with trucks with dump beds on a cattle ranch. Nice choice of a truck on your part. Good luck with your restoration.

Hey Guys,

This is great. The BASF seems to match better than the PPG but it is easier to get PPG in my area. Do you have the code for the PPG?

That's been the problem, no one has been able to get a formula
to match from a PPG dealer. Most paint dealers can mix up a
match to your sample, but this was the first time that anyone
has actually given us a formula, that is, a piece of paper to
take to the paint store that's repeatable at any BASF
paint dealer.
You may have to drive to the next town but there certainly
should be BASF dealers in your area.

If you do manage to find a formula for a PPG paint, please,
share it with us.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I'm wondering if this applies to gmc trucks too. Currently restoring my 49 wheel/column.

thanks

Ok thanks. So that would be the column, wheel and shift knob? Shifter stick would be black? Just want to confirm before I do any spraying!

Thorens,

A GMC could be different. But, I don't think so. The steering wheel, steering column and 3 speed lever, should all be painted this color. Even the linkage rod that connects your shift lever to the 3 speed shift transmission, is the same color. Nothing on the steering column was painted black from the factory. The actual shift knob should be a maroon color Leave the horn button alone. It is its own color. The only thing that is could be attached to the steering column, that could be black, is a dealer installed or aftermarket turn signal switch. For instance, a Guide brand model 6004. Hopefully that will help you. If any of you guys are more familiar with the GMC and I am incorrect, please let me know.

Hope this will help you with your restoration.

Rugo
