Got a “pig-in-a-poke” ‘63 230 c.i. Motor. Last two letters stamped on pad next to dizzy are “NE”. Anyone know what those letters mean? Whole series of numbers is “F1228NE”. Thanks

From this chart, it appears that the last year for a 2-letter suffix code was 1969, but that one doesn't show.

https://novaresource.org/codes.htm

By 1970, it also appears that the 230 6 cylinder engine was not produced- - - -250 only listed from 1970-up. I also wonder if the site I found was only showing passenger cars, not truck applications?

I have been informed that the “NE” tells us the block is for a 1963-64 C10. The truck is a ‘64 C10 so my nephew got lucky. That is, if the old time engine rebuild shop doesn’t tell him it’s a ‘boat anchor’. Thanks for your time.

I believe the Speed-Pro hypereutectic cast flat top pistons with the Teflon skirt coating for a 283 V8 are a drop-in fit for the 230 like the same design piston for a 307 fit the 250 engine. The 194 cylinder head has more compression, but it also has smaller valves, IIRC. I'm in the planning stages of building a high-RPM 230 with NASCAR tool steel connecting rods and three side draft carbs to put in an Excalibur fiberglass roadster. I'm considering destroking that one to get down around 200 cubic inches and increase the RPM capability.

Jerry, You have me scratching my head. I have read a number of your posts where you state multiple carbs are a disaster waiting to happen. Now your plan is to mount three carbs, sidedraft sounds like SU types, on yours ‘screamer’. What am I to think?

I fat-fingered the keyboard and erased a 3-paragraph reply! This engine will be a high RPM toy designed to make small block V8 owners go home with egg on their faces after getting smoked at a stoplight by a 6 cylinder that sounds like a bumblebee on steroids. I'll be doing the dyno work needed to make a 3-carb setup work, which is a LOT simpler than making two carbs even marginally successful on an inline six. The carbs are Harley Davidson EVO Mikuni diaphragm/piston types, and they'll essentially be feeding one cylinder at a time due to the firing order. They will be easy to jet for proper mixture, and they'll have the right CFM to work that way. Most people put two carbs on, each big enough to run the engine by themselves, and expect some miracle to happen that keeps the fuel system from running so lean the backfires will blow the air cleaners off.
