I got this wheel for free the other day. I was wondering what year you guys think it is. My guess was an advance design year, but I don't know wheels

Yes, A-D wheels had those hub-cap clips.

16" diameter (the tire size will confirm that).

It could be 6.00 or 6.50 tire width - 4.0" or 4.5" rim width.

Looks to be a '48 and older Chev passenger car, per the stripes, don't think trucks got stripes. Also it has 6 clips back then, later trucks only got 3 clips.

I beg to differ in all due respect Jim, I have date coded original 1953 16" wheels with 6 clips, Date code on wheel found after glass beading blasting January of 1953, came off original unmolested survivor truck.
I epoxied the wheel rivets incase I decided to run tubeless but I ended up with tube after all. All five wheels match

Did chevy leave the clip hubcap attachments for the nub hubcap attachments in 1960 or thereabouts?

Yes, small truck wheels had one to three stripe on them from the factory (47-55st).
Do you want documentation?

Does anyone know what years had 3 clips or 6 clips?

My original one owner 47 Stylemaster coupe had the exact same wheel, could have used same on trucks.
Also had an original 57 half ton, 15" with only 3 clips.

6 clips from the mid 30's to 1953..... 3 clips from 1954 on.

Jim Carter has well documented the nuances of pin striping on the AD truck rims in these images.....

Thanks, MT - regarding clips, and for the illustrations in you post.

Regarding striping: it is also described in the Specifications Manuals for each year, usually with poor illustrations.

What interests me is the width of the stripes. Since they were applied by hand, the painter could choose the width of the stripes. The width of the body stripe on my my 1954 Suburban was about 1/8”. We have seen illustrations of some earlier body stripes being around 1/4” or larger (as shown in a panel trucks sales video recently posted).

Yes, other than possibly some factory foreman using up clip wheel inventory on early 61's, Chevy switched to nub in 1961 on light trucks.
GMC went one year longer with clips. Maybe that's where the inventory went smile (I think the wheels are slightly different though)
