Anyone had issues putting original (antique) plates on a vehicle? I found 1951 Texas plates on eBay for my 1951 3100. Any tips or advice?

Chris,

Check with your DMV.
Most states allow the use of YOM plate/plates for your state

You might even find that information on VA DMV website.

In NC, I received “normal” plates that must be kept in my truck when I use my YOM 1954 truck plate.

I doubt that you can use YOM TX plate/plates on a VA-registered truck.

Since I am military, my state of residence is Texas. Just trying to identify issues I may encounter.

** I have year of mfg. plates on a 51 five window, a 52 five window & a 53 Suburban. I live in Denton county Tex. The dept. of motor vehicles girl told me the only thing they had to verify was the vintage plate numbers were not being used on any other plates in Texas. To include current late model vehicle plates.

SUBCHAPTER F. SPECIALTY LICENSE PLATES WITH RESTRICTED DISTRIBUTION AND REGULAR LICENSE PLATE FEES

Sec. 504.501. CLASSIC MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAVEL TRAILERS; CUSTOM VEHICLES; STREET RODS.

(a) The department shall issue specialty license plates for a motor vehicle that is at least 25 years old or is a custom vehicle or street rod. The license plates must include the word or words "Classic," "Custom Vehicle," or "Street Rod," or a similar designation, as appropriate.

(b) A person eligible for the license plates may instead use license plates that were issued by this state in the same year as the model year of the vehicle and are approved by the department. The department may require the attachment of a registration insignia to the license plate in a manner that does not affect the display of information originally on the license plate.

(c) There is no fee for issuance or approval of license plates under this section.

(d) Notwithstanding Chapter 547, a custom vehicle or street rod eligible to receive license plates under this section is not required to be equipped with a specific piece of equipment unless the specific piece of equipment was required by statute as a condition of sale during the year listed as the model year on the certificate of title.

(e) On initial registration of a custom vehicle or street rod, the owner must provide proof, acceptable to the department, that the custom vehicle or street rod passed a safety inspection that has been approved by the department. The department shall create a safety inspection process for inspecting custom vehicles and street rods.

(f) In this section:

(1) "Custom vehicle" means a vehicle:

(A) that is:

(i) at least 25 years old and of a model year after 1948; or

(B) that:

(i) has been altered from the manufacturer's original design; or

(ii) has a body constructed from materials not original to the vehicle.

(2) "Street rod" means a vehicle:

(A) that was manufactured:

Sec. 504.502. CERTAIN EXHIBITION VEHICLES.

(a) The department shall issue specialty license plates for a passenger car, truck, motorcycle, bus, or former military vehicle that:

(1) is at least 25 years old, if the vehicle is a passenger car, truck, motorcycle, or bus;

(2) is a collector's item;

(3) is used exclusively for exhibitions, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest and is not used for regular transportation; and

(4) does not carry advertising.

(b) The license plates must include the words "Antique Auto," "Antique Truck," "Antique Motorcycle," "Antique Bus," or "Military Vehicle," as appropriate.

(c) A person eligible for the license plates may instead use license plates issued by this state in the same year as the model year of the vehicle and approved by the department, provided that a passenger car must bear passenger car or truck license plates and a truck must bear passenger car or truck license plates. The department may require attachment of a registration insignia to the license plate in a manner that does not affect the display of information originally on the license plate.

(d) License plates issued or approved under this section expire on the fifth anniversary of the date of issuance or approval.

(e) The fee for issuance or approval of license plates under this section is:

(1) $10 for each year or portion of a year remaining in the five-year registration period if the vehicle was manufactured in 1921 or later; or

(2) $8 for each year or portion of a year remaining in the five-year registration period if the vehicle was manufactured before 1921.

(f) The department may exempt a former military vehicle from the requirement to display a license plate or registration insignia if the exemption is necessary to maintain the vehicle's accurate military markings. The department may approve an alternative registration insignia that is compatible with the vehicle's original markings.

(g) A person entitled to specialty license plates or to department approval under this section may register the vehicle without payment of any fees paid for or at the time of registration except the fee for the license plate.

Thanks gents! You confirmed everything that I had found! Just bought a plate so hopefully it isn’t in use.

Did you get a single or a pair? I think you have to own the pair, even if you are not required to run both when registered as an antique.

Texas plates in pairs come up on ebay regularly. Try pricing 1950 TEXAS TRUCK plates. I have just bought a pair of 50 truck plates at $350, got outbid several months ago at $400. Regular car plates without the TRUCK at the bottom are somewhat cheaper. Texas FARM TRUCK plates are even cheaper, but they can not be used according to DVM. I don't know whether the car plates can be used on a truck, but from reading the above regs it appears they might be. I have a pair of all 3 and intend to run the TEXAS TRUCK plates now. I did get lucky on my dad's 28 A. I only could find the rear, these plates for 3 years stated front and rear on them. They didn't ask to see the FRONT plate. I am running YOM plates on 67 and 69 corvette, 27 T, and have the FORMER MILITARY plate on a M923A2 5 ton truck. Good for 5 years and no inspection required.

I will try taking in the single plate. If they say no, then back to the drawing board!

I have YOM plates on my ‘53. Had a small amount of confusion at our local tax office but a call to Austin DVM and the patience of the local personnel got all the paperwork fixed up. I found original ‘53 truck plates (never issued and with the tissue paper still intact) on eBay at a reasonable? price.

I bought a set of 1949 Texas Farm Truck Plates in decent shape for a decent price. I revisited the rules and saw that Farm Truck plates couldn't be used as YOM when registered as an antique or classic vehicle. But I wonder if I were to register it as a farm truck that they could be used, since that is what it will be used for. If I can't use them, I may just run current plates and keep the YOM to display or swap out when on display. I just have to remember to swap them before heading home.

If anyone has any 1949 Truck plates for a truck in Texas, I'm in the market. Watching ebay again i guess....

Aggie,
I purchased a single plate, told DMV I have both. I put a photocopy of the plate on my interior sun visor. I just flip it down when driving!

A friend of mine is running '60 Farm Truck plates on his. He apparently wasn't aware that you couldn't run them, and neither was the clerk at the tax office.

I'm hoping my clerk will do the same. An obsure nuianse of the law I am sure that no one is familiar with. I'll give it a shot. Honestly, I want to register it as a farm truck, as that is how it will be used. I have the credentials to get farm truck plates, so I'm gonna cross my fingers and hope it works. If it doesn't, I'll just run straight plates and swap them out if I go to display it at a tractor show or somewhere else.

Honestly, as long as Mr. State Trooper can call it in and get an owner, I wouldn't think it would matter.

Hoping though that it will work as I bought a set of YOM Farm Truck plates for my dad for Christmas. He is having my Grandfathers 66 restored. He was proud as a peacock with those plates.
