Repacking front axle bearings. The grease seal that goes on the back of the brake drum (open face) and against backing plate has a lip on the i.d. Of the seal. The old one didn’t. Can anyone tell me which way that lip faces, toward drum or backing plate? Thanks.

Got the answer on another forum. The lip goes toward the bearing for those who might replace the wheel bearing seals in a tri five someday. Thanks.

Just curious, why are we asking car questions? Inquiring minds want to know.

Cars have stovebolt engines too.
The lip of the seal always faces the lubricant on any application.

George, what does a front axle bearing seal have to do with a Stovebolt engine? Just trying to keep this site as it was intended to be by the site owners. Cars can be discussed without being criticized in the Greasy Spoon.

Being the owner of a 57 Bel Air Sport Coupe and a 56 3100 series truck, I can attest to the fact that many of the components interchange. They both have the same wheel base, use the same 3 speed manual and overdrive transmissions, and use the same driveshaft and universal joints. On some years and models the wheel bearings are the same, as are brake linings, engines, distributors, generators, starters, and numerous electrical and mechanical components. I believe in the purpose of specific sites but factual information should be able to be shared across the board.

Sorry to stir this up. I will try to be more “tongue in cheek” in the future. I have helped several guys with problems on this forum only to find out in a pm that they were working on late model cars. Doesn’t matter to me...if a guy needs help, then he needs help. Sorry, I’m from the south and we look at things differently.

beltfed, please check your Private Messages.

Guys, I can’t stop you from posting CAR questions. I don’t have and don’t want that power. All I’m asking is you respect the mission as laid out by the site owners. I’m going to ask the Moderator to lock this thread. The initial question has been answered.
