I wire wheeled off the thicker parts of rust on the hood today. I plan on sandblasting it tomorrow. Do I need to remove the center line trim and split the hood? What has everyone else done with their tin-work? Has anyone got tips for patching rust on the fenders/lower doors?

From the hood I recently stripped all the chrome, hinges and their mounting brackets, springs, latch assembly plate, etc leaving only the few underside rivets and the trim line down the center on top. I left the two hood halves together, media blasted and then sprayed both sides with two coats epoxy primer.

The entire cab, inner and outer fenders, doors, grill and all component body parts are separated, torn down, blasted and primed likewise. From Classic Industries and Jim Carter Old Chevy Trucks I ordered replacement panels for the inner and outer cab corners and floor pan under the heater core. Will learn sheet metal work next week. Chassis was blasted and primed also, engine and running gear, brakes, suspension are completely rebuilt and installed. New tires mounted up on refurbished RH-5 wheels.

Are you worried about moisture getting under the center trim line a streaking rust down your paint?

It hasn’t made a mess in almost 70 years. But it wouldn’t difficult to split the hood halves at this point, just drill out some rivets. Might be time well spent to separate, clean and prime.
