ive got a 55 chevy 2nd series, and id like to put a 350 motor with an overdrive tranny into my truck. this will be my first time 'rodding out a vehicle with a different motor. what is the best way to go about this, in terms of mounting motor mounts and tranny cross members? how do i know where they should go? thanks for the advice

to put a later sbc [350] in yer 55 you have to use an aftermarket front cross member to use the side mounts on the 350 - tranny will hang off the bellhousing same as the 6 does, or same as the 283 would
to position the new cross member, measure things up, and/or put the mount on the engine and put the whole thing in place so the bellhousing mounts sit on the stock cross member to position the new forward one

you are saying to put the mounts on the motor, and bolt on the tranny to the motor, and then position it so that the tranny mounts sit on the rear crossmember, and see where the front crossmember needs to be? will it matter that i am trying to use a newer (automatic od) tranny, rather than the old one, in terms of placement? thanks for the responses, i appreciate it.
clark | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 1,554 | This is the same combo I have in my 55 2nd.I used an aftermarket crossmember motormount and tranny mount.yeah bolt the tranny to the engine.Hook up the tranny and motor mounts.Then sit everything in and square it up.make sure to leave some room between the distributor and the firewall,about an inch shoud do.Now bolt or weld your tranny crossmember to the frame,next,with the carb off place a level where the carb sits and level the motor,square it up side to side and tack weld the new motormount crossmember in place.Next diconnect the mounts from the motor,and tranny pull everything out again and weld the mounts in solid. Thats the way I did mine | | |
