Which hole in the engine block does the inlet hose connect to? The one closest to the exhaust pipe or the one closest to the flywheel? Thanks for your help. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,799 Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) | | Kettle Custodian (pot stirrer) Joined: Feb 2004 Posts: 29,799 | The hose that goes to the side of the canister attaches to the port closest to the flywheel which is also where the oil pressure line attaches. Use a 1/8" NPT "Street Tee" to make a clean-looking installation for both lines. The drain hose from the bottom goes to the forward port down near the oil pan rail. The oil will flow either way, but that's the usual way to connect the lines. It's sometimes a good idea to extend the block ports with pipe nipples to keep the rubber lines away from the exhaust pipe. A burned or damaged flex line will empty the crankcase before you know something is wrong.

Once the oil leaves the filter on a 216 it joins the flow to the rocker arms through the water jacket. On a full pressure 235, it dumps back into the oil pan.

On my 216 I have an engine port immediately in front of the flywheel and one just behind the exhaust pipe. Which one is the correct port? The pictures posted by cmayna above show the input line connected to the port just behind the exhaust. From your previous post you said the port right in front of the flywheel. One of those holes is not an oil port- - - -it's a coolant drain. It's lower and further back than the oil port, which goes into a raised ridge that runs the full length of the block. The coolant drain has a 1/4" pipe thread, while the oil pressure port is 1/8" NPT. If your oil filter gets full of coolant, which then gets dumped into the crankcase, you picked wrong! Applying just a smidgen of common sense is usually a good thing in these situations!
