I have a 63 c10 230 w/ granny 4 speed. I believe it’s a 1/2 ton
I’m looking up clutch parts and some places say 10 inch others say with 4 speed it’s an 11 inch
How do I tell before removing trans

Probably 11 inch but you don't need to know before removing trans. Standard came with 10". A 230 could be ordered with 11" and a 4 speed came with 11".

You never know what the many previous owners did.

Curious why you don't know if it's a half ton? Vin tells you. Also, 6 lug wheels= 1/2T, 8 lug= 3/4 and up. No shortbed 3/4T.

ok thanks, i was just wanting to order the disc and PP before removing, when i go to autozone or oreilly they don't specify 3 speed or 4 speed and only offer the 10 ice, but i can't remember were i saw that 4 speeds had the 11 inch even with the 230.

O'Reilly's, Summit, Jegs, Rockauto and many others sell 11" clutch for a 1963 230. They can't tell you what you actually have anymore than I can. Generally they are not listed by transmission. You have to take it apart or otherwise measure. As I said, it can have a 10" or an 11" or maybe a 10.4". Should have an 11" because the 4 speed came with an 11", as I said. Things like that can get changed around by PO's. If you don't need to drive it for a while, just tear it down and then order. Prices are all over the place. From $80 per set to hundreds.

I would think you can put in an 11" regardless of what is has, but can't be sure. Possible your flywheel/bell housing might restrict you.

Ok thanks, but another question, I have the 3rd 4th synchro going out, I was going to replace, but they are getting scarce, has anyone bought kits from transmission direct out of New Jersey?
I would like to have gone with novack but they no longer carry?

Schetk, just a word of advise. When changing topics it is best to start a new thread. Why? It helps others using our search engine, in this case searching for clutch size. They may not be interested in syncros. Thanks, The Stovebolt Staff

The SM420 can still be bought used in some areas for less than a rebuild/parts. They are somewhat bullet proof and a bad one is rare. They can be inspected a little before buying. $50-$350 in the donor market.

** Just purchased a SM 420 for $100 was caked with 65 years of crud so could not tell a whole lot on condition on the outside. Spent it's whole life in a 53 3100, removed the side plate & looked really good inside with the exception of the granny gear had the leading edges of the teeth worn a little. Figured most of the SM 420's would probably show the same thing after 65 years as the 1st gear is not synchronized. **

Gears have a lead-in chamfer on their edges.
