Help please. Please see photo attachment. Any idea what this silver knob is on the side of my distributor cap, towards the dipstick?

It's a grease cup. Unscrew the cap and you'll find grease in it (maybe). How they work is you pack the cap full of grease and screw it on, which pushes the grease into the bushing in the distributor. Every 6 months or so, give it a turn to keep the bushing lubed.

The distributor grease cup is often a very neglected service operation .

Some don't even know what it is , your distributor will reward you with

longer life if you perform the needed service it requires .

Go to ebay & in the search box..........type.........HALF TRACK DELCO REMY GREASE CUP

Unscrew the cap & clean out the old caked & baked grease out of the cap

Refill with fresh grease .

Check to see if the spring & plug are still there

If the spring & plug are there ,

You can remove the spring & plug and clean out

that area of the grease cup .

Clean the spring & plug & put them back into the fitting.

Tighten the cap until the fresh grease starts to come out of the end of the fitting .

Re-install the grease cup into the distributor .

After installing , screw the cap down one turn so grease gets to the shaft bushing .

Tighten the cap down every 1,000 miles .

Re-fill cap every 5,000 miles .

It is worth your while to check and see if the spring and Bakelite disc are in place. They keep pressure on the shaft to keep the shaft from wobbling. If the disc is missing, the spring is riding directly on the shaft cutting into the shaft it self. Clean out the old grease, repack and as recommended above, a turn Every once in a while. New Bakelite discs are near impossible to find. The piece to the right is a piece of Delrin that I cut down to use as a replacement.

Use chassis grease, not bearing grease. Bearing grease is less viscous and will squeeze out around the cup threads instead of going where it's needed. Chassis grease is viscous enough to not do that.
