Both are 12 volt--should the 49 have a dimmer switch for the 2 gauge clusters, like the 51? Don't know if dimmer was standard in 1949. Thanks for your excellent assistance..Bill

Just re-read your post. Are you actually talking about the ability to dim the gauge lights?

My light switch appears like it might turn to adjust the gauge lights, but it doesn't work very well. I have to fiddle with it to just get the gauge lights on sometimes. I'm guessing after 70 years the rheostat is a little worn out.

The rheostat gets corroded/oxidized.

There is a spay fluid available that rejuvenates the rheostat contact surfaces.
Radio Shack used to sell a product.

Maybe someone will post info on a readily available cleaner?

Found CRC QD electronic cleaner and another made by Permatex. Would one have to remove the switch to spray, or reach under the dash?.Thanks BIll
