I just purchased a 292 head that was made in Mexico but it appears different than othe heads I have had. It has bolts going into the head diagonally from the top on the intake side. Anyone have an idea as to why they are there or if this a correct head? It's the orange painted head by the way.
Someone may happen along with more info but I'll swag those are capped off SMOG pollution ports. I had a 250 with SMOG control that looked similar. PIC Dave

Right on the money. Injection nozzle ports for the later 292 Chevy AIR system. Fine to use as a head, even for high performance. In Leo Santucci’s 6 cylinder performance book there is a photo of a 292 lump port head that is described as having epoxy lumps for a turbo application. If you look closely, you will see that head has the ports, but blocked off like yours. I own that head and it ran on a couple of race Cars over the years so don’t hesitate to use it with the ports all blocked off.
Thanks Dragsix! So when you say with all the ports blocked off do you just meant the bolts to block it or actually seal up the relief they protrude into as well?
A better-looking fix is to rethread the air injection ports with a pipe tap and use Allen head pipe plugs to block off the ports. I believe 3/8 NPT is the correct size. Jerry

When I obtained the head, it had the bolts and had been run in an early Angelia into the 10s in the quarter mile by a friend of mine. After I got the head, I removed the bolts, one came out funky and really messed up the threads and the bolt. So to correct, I sort of did the modification as suggested by HHL, just further down into the injector port. If you pull the bolts, you will see the port narrows down and that is where you can run threads and run a hex plug down to the roof, and then blend into the roof, if you want to do that. I dont have a photo host so I can’t post photos. If you shoot me an email address I can shoot you a photo as long as you post it so others can see the modification.
Mike, if you have photos saved to your computer you can post them here without a separate hosting site. Read about it in the left margin of every page.

Ok, so remember, my plugs are in pretty far because I buggered up a couple of the bolts getting them out. I will get around to building another motor to use this head on and will sort out something to pretty up the top part of the port.
Hey fantastic you pulled it off. I just PM'd you with my email address but guess i didn't need to. I usually have to get my teenage kids to show how to do anything with the computer or phone at least for the first time.
