'37 GMC T-18 w/ DD 4-53T, RTO-610, 6231 aux., '95 GMC running gear, full disc brakes, power steering, 22.5 wheels and tires.
'47 GMC 1 ton w/ 302, NP-540, 4wd, full width Blazer front axle.
'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

If there's any angle at all on the u-joint, the torque reading will not reflect the actual torque.
A better approach would be to use a crowsfoot installed at a right angle to the torque wrench if it's not possible to get the torque wrench on the bolt with a socket on it.
With a little mathematics you could use an extender in line with the wrench stem.

Like my first shop foreman used to say about cylinder head bolts- - - - -"Give 'em a good grunt!" (No, I didn't do it that way), but he would always give me the stink eye when I got out the torque wrench!

I've never torqued a bell housing onto an engine in 55 years of backyard/barn monkey wrenching and have had no problems. I have replaced bell housings for others that had ears broken off and/or cracked. Too much torque or not enough?

Rick Yes.........we are NOT working on the bell housing on the space shuttle. Cracked causes .........misaligned, missing dowel pins or tightened when not seated against the block?

All it takes is a few thousandths' gap that can't close up for a brittle casting to break.
