So I need new front tires and the tires shops wont touch my rims.... what types of rims could swap without too much extra cash cuz I'm sure 6 rims ain't gonna be cheap ... I have 8.25-20 tires on the Firestone rh-5's... and I'm wanting to put 9.00-20's on the rear for a little more speed with less rpm since my 8.25s now will only get me to 50mph top speed (3k.rpm)with my ratio. I would like to get my rpm down a tad at 50mph but new tires is main deal. The rh-5's are 10lug, 9in apart on center. Hub hole is 6.25" i.d. if there are easy options please let me know, I know a spot to get older truck rims and a bus garage near that might part with spare parts.

Thanks mike

Since you're buying tires anyway, see if you can find a set of 22.5" tubeless rims. There's a 22.5 equivalent height tire for just about every size of 20" tube type tire out there. We used to use them interchangeably on dual wheel tandems, a 22.5 and a 20" side by side on the same hub.

Hy DIY.MechanicMike, I believe a careful remeasure of your wheel stud center to center measurement will reveal they are actually ten studs on an 8.75" circle, hope that helps.

Would any school buses have 22.5" rims with 10lug on 8.75" circle (hub mount hole 6.25" i.d.) that would be awesome cuz i know there is a bus garage near me that has lots of parts they might let a set go...

Grab a tape measure, put your hiking boots on and start walking those old junk yards and look at every bus on the lot...that's the best way to find 22.5" rims!

Gotcha lol wasn't sure if there were specific years that would be a perfect match so I didn't have to put so many miles on My hiking boots lol but what is the average price for used 22.5's each?

You just have to look
That bolt pattern is a GM only, so that’ll save you some looking.
Price at a junk yard, try $25 (any old wheel) and then you remove and dispose of old tire. Otherwise they’ll tell you what they expect to get for a wheel.

If you find rims that need to be taken off of the truck, offer the owner 100$ for all six BEFORE you remove them...you might get lucky!

Well I know a medium/heavy duty truck salvage yard that has 60acres of big bolt joy... from I'd say 1950s+ but mostly a lot of 70s-80s that are in decent parting shape the older stuff is pretty ransacked and mother earth is taking her share back too via rust lol but I know for a fact rims will be gotten there but I wanna try bus garage first cuz they might have a fit with decent tires on them for a good deal... so the rims I should hunt for are the 22.5s tubeless single piece rims? And these rims would have to be on a gm axle for correct lug pattern? Are tires easily available for the 22.5s? Thanks mike

Your bolt pattern was somewhat limited in use, I don't have the year range handy..
No, not any GM truck, just the ones that share your bolt pattern. Take your tape measure or calibrated eyeball.

Any bus that might have had that bolt patter would be quite old, I think better luck hunting in the junkyard.

22.5" truck tires are as readily available as they get. You're probably looking for 10R22.5 as first choice, possibly the smaller 9R22.5

Ok so I hit my medium/heavy duty salvage yard and they didn't have any rims that would swap out. They said what I'm looking for is pretty rare to find anymore. He said he will keep an eye out for some as he does a lot of traveling buying up these trucks from recycling places before they tear them up. He said he was at a scrapyard 3 months ago, and the jackasses operating the machines there, bent up the style of rims I was inquiring. He told them they just ruined a good set of rare to find rims due to their slop operating. But what can you do, most of the guys running the heavy equiptment in places like that are half stupid anyway. So they dont give a crap about actually recycling, they just wanna sell our good metal to china. so they can cut it with tin and ship it back to us, to rust out in 10 years, if your lucky. So really they are just killing the metal market unless they recycle it here in the states but highly doubtful.... but anyway besides the rant of china running the world lol.

how should I go about this... I emailed wheelsnow, they make rims and I wanted to see a price for new wheels to compare cost. The guy at salvage yard said I could swap to the Dayton style rims but I'd have to swap out hubs so I'm wondering which is gonna be best bet for the money, cuz if I do that I'll have to spend money on wheels and hubs vs new wheels... which do you think would be cheaper or more reasonable for future maintenance?

Thanks Mike

Mike- - - - -just a gentle suggestion- - - - -some of us old geezers who were actually taught to communicate in complete sentences, with proper punctuation, get out of breath reading your posts. Try tossing in a period and some capital letters every now and then!

Sorry, I use my phone to get on the forum and forget I'm typing instead of texting. I dont have a computer or laptop so this is my only way to get on here, but I'll try to remember to use my punctuation. I just get in a hurry typing with my phone and the punctuation is hard to find. Lol that darn lazy typing on phone gets me all the time...

So i made up my mind, I'm gonna order new tubeless rims from wheelsnow. They make them in the bolt size I need, but only have the 22.5s. which I dont see being a problem, other then how much bigger will that make the tires circumference? I have the 8.25-20 rh5s, so how much bigger will the 9-22.5s or 10-22.5s be then my original size?
Thanks mike

The 20's and 22.5's are direct swaps for each other and a truck could be ordered from the factory with either rim size.

So, here's how they match up;

8.25x20 = 9.00x22.5

9.00x20 = 10.00x22.5

10.00x20 = 11.00x22.5

Make sure the rim width you go with is correct for the tire size you want to use.

Hope this helps,

Grigg thanks for the link. I'm gonna check them out and see if I can get any cheaper, or if not Evansville, Indiana is about 2-3hour drive so beats paying the freight charge. on top of the rims. which the wheelsnow place has them also and they are wanting 250ea plus freight but I think it'll be worth it once i replace the rims and get new tires cuz I probably wont ever have to replace them or atleast for a good while cuz it's not drove alot

Right, they are discontinued, but knowing they did exist and having the part number means you can likely find them possibly NOS, and for sure used.
I have one, and have seen others out there.

Well I have called a few places and the 60 acre medium duty salvage yard didn't have any either so I'm thinking these are like finding a diamond mine, they are out there just finding them is the ticket. i dont have the time to hunt anymore need the truck, so I'm gonna just order new ones from "wheelsnow" @ 250 each... and "wheelsnow" has not discontinued them, so for any of you in the same boat as me "wheelsnow" is the place to get them....

Might get a picture or clarification on just what you're ordering form WheelsNow.
I've seen several examples of 22.5" wheels they sell as replacements for formerly available 22.5" wheels/bolt patterns, the replacements don't look very good. They use a wheel with an overly large flat center and bore and drill it to fit what you order. This while a functional replacement for whatever old wheel part number you may ask for is not the same style and appearance as the original wheel.

This is what the original Accuride 22.5" wheel with the 10 lug on 8.75" bolt circle looks like.

That picture you linked is one of the types they sell and is the one I was gonna order. The other type they have is alot bulkier looking and ugly style of you ask me but I'm not really to worried about looks i have a 72 chevy dump that I'm hauling rock and wood chips in so looks is the least of my concerns, usability and serviceable is all I want... but I sure wish I could find 6 of those rims you got there Haha

I am new here but have a '70 C50 and have the wheels now 28160 version setting here. The centers are .096 thicker as best I can tell and unless you have a line on longer studs you lose 3/16" of nut with there use when dualed. I will go introduce myself now. Tom

Hello tom thanks for replying .... so are you saying the grey bulkier rims are the ones you have? I just realized that the white ones I saw on their site are the accuride ones that are obsolete. So the grey bulkier ones are what I have to get. But in your post you say they are thicker?, meaning the hub pilot metal is thicker, requiring longer studs on the rear axle for dual applications? And 3/8" is what is lost on the rear axles studs? And when you got those rims did they say what the weight capacity was bcuz I noticed their site didn't list that on their replacement model which makes me worry..... thanks mike

Also I was gonna ask if there are any front end parts I should be checking condition of since I'm getting new tires? I dont want to eat up some new tires from neglecting to fix front axle parts? I'm guess ball joints and tie rods should be checked but anything else?

Mechanic mike yes the wheels now wheels are thicker. Think they are rated 4000lbs +

You may have a shortage of stud in your nut. I would guess mine at 3/16 maybe a little more. Got some longer studs coming appears they may have introduced these in 1973. Will post when i receive and install. We should have plenty of time here before I need the truck as the weather is uncooperative. Tom
