I’ve made some progress with my truck and next on the list to tackle is tires and wheels. I’m scared I have the dreaded RH-5. I’ve read everything I could find I’m quite certain I’m more confused now than before. I understand the cross section but I cannot find identifying pictures of the wheel face, inside and out. I have 7 1/4” x 5 fronts with 4 3/4” pilot and 7 1/4” x 10 rears with 4 3/4 pilot.

If I’m missing pictures somewhere please let me know where to go.

Why not use the Stovebolt Photo process shown in the left margin of every page?👋🏻

I’m using my phone and cannot see what you are referring to.
I’ve posted hot links before on this site without issue, but if there is an easier way I’m all for it.

Instead of trying to determine if your wheels are RH5... see if they are something else. True the RH5 is hard to see how it actually works or fits together but all the other wheels are real easy to see how they work
https://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/wheels/images/49_budd_catalog.jpg

Notice in the picture all the non RH5 wheels have relatively small removable side rings sometimes with locking rings, and they're always at the edge of the wheel.
The RH5 are the only wheel split in about the middle, both parts of the wheel are almost same size. Or notice the very outsides of the RH5 rim are plain and simple.

If the wheel in question resembles anything other than the RH5 it's not an RH5.

Your wheels pictured are not RH5 wheels, again look at the removable side ring and split lock ring as seen on a front wheel from outside.

Ok thank you for the reply. I read so much it kind of all got jumbled together, but now that you point it out I clearly see the locking ring and it being non-characteristic of the RH-5. I thought I read something about the valve stem originating from a raised center ridge, which gave me concern, as a sign of the RH-5.

The front wheel in your picture appears to be a 3-piece rim with a removable outer bead ring secured by a small locking ring that fits into grooves in the wheel and the outer bead ring. That's not an RH-5. The rear wheels are different- - - - -that 2" wide flat spot near the center is a dead giveaway (pun intended) that they're widowmakers! Jerry

I believe the rears are same as the front, non RH5*.
Take a look at the opposite side, do you have lock rings? You do on the inner rear shown through a hand hole on one picture.

I think these are the wheels he has. They are Firestone AR.

They were very common on Fords in the 1950s. They were rare on GM trucks.

The rears appear to be the same as the front, with a locking ring. The wide center band with the valve stem cutout was what lead me to believe they were the RH5. The truck is on a flat steer at the moment, I plan to pull off a rear and put one on each corner. I’ll take the flat to a local shop and see if they are willing to break it down.

Hopefully your wheels aren't too rusty. While, in my opinion, The AR were the best multi-piece wheels ever made, they do tend to rust. I think moisture tends to settle in them more than other styles.
