Just bought me a (bad) cab , engine with gearbox out of a 1956 gmc pickup I guess.
Since the l6 engine seems in good condition (good compression , no leaks to the coolant ) I would like to change most of the gaskets since some oil leaks are apparent.
I ve been reading and searching a lot on this forums and on the internet too, but i m una le to identify this engine?
The only stamped nr i found is behind the distributor C174099
Behind the starter motor is the casting nr 3837004 GM M (This last M is further to the right of the engine , between distributor and vent tube This M is casted in a square surround)
Behind the inlet/outlet we found a kind of "label" o E30 6 o 1 or I (??? About 4 " lower ) N (inclined about 45 degrees)
The cilinderhead outside the cover mentions 3836848 GM
Inside the cover between 1 and 2 cilinder 1
Inside the cover midst of the 5 cilinder D (inclined)
Outside the cover between 4 and 5 cilinder soms kind of "label " F o 7 o 6 o (Where the "o" stands for a kind of what looks like a cast "head of a small screw"
Sofar what concernw the engine
Inside the cab , on tfhe left door pillar we found a tag aw follows
GM OF CANADA LIMITED Made in GM CANADA MODEL 1314 SERIAL 61314607513 ENGINE C174099 BODY SERIES 2819 TRIM PAINT 5207
So it seems the cab and the engine belong together since the engine nr is the same As mentioned above , my interest goes only to the engine , since i am restoring a 1959 which had a much younger v8 engine unted the hood which replaced the original l6 Somwhere oved time. So I intend to re-swap it !
Hope sombody can help me with this issue, so that I could order the right gasket set for it !
Thanks anyway !
Greetings from Belgium !

Make sure it is for a high pressure 235 (most gasket manufacturers would call it 1954-1962 235). The earlier low-pressure 235 engines used different gaskets (used also on the 216s, I think). | | | | Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 15 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Feb 2007 Posts: 15 | Welcome to Stovebolt, what are the plans for you new '56?

I want to add that the Canadian built GMC trucks were manufactured with Chevrolet drive trains so don't confuse the USA made kissing cousin GMC trucks. Vintage Vehicle Services can report production numbers, color and other specific details about your Canadain built truck if you provide them your VIN. fax 1-905-440-7644 ph 1-905-440-7636 www.vintagevehicleservices.com | | | | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,320 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 5,320 | Make sure it is for a high pressure 235 (most gasket manufacturers would call it 1954-1962 235). The pan gasket for a 56 should fit 1955-62 235, and 1955-63 261.

Welcome Staf. The M with a square around it means that it was cast at McKinnon Industries in St. Catharines Ontario. GM owned that engine plant for many years. | | |
