Hi guys,
I have a 48’ gmc fc-100 and want to add a drivers side door lock. I read a lot of old threads on drivers side door lock but still have one question, is it just a matter of adding a lock and shaft to the latch that is already on the door or does the latch need changed too? Of the threads I read none of them were very clear on what the procedure is to add the locking mechanism. I may have missed the one that was and I know this was a well covered subject but any insight will help.

Assuming the GMC would be the same as a Chevy, the lock mechanism is in the latch, and I don't think you'll find a driver's side latch that has the locking mechanism (whether is would be NOS or aftermarket). At least I haven't seen one. Passenger side would (NOS and aftermarket) cause that's how they came originally.

Provided you added a lock on the driver's side (which I have done on a 51), adding the shaft would do no good as there are no provisions on the latch for the shaft to operate, like it does on the passenger side. But I did some fabricating, on the lock cylinder I bought and to my existing latch, and it functions. All you'll have is the lock face showing under your door handle, with everything else being inside the door. Would be kind of hard to explain what I did and how I did it, but the design is really simple. I think I have some pictures of what the latch looks like after I did my addition to it. I'll see if I can find those.

I did a step by step pictorial of putting a lock in the drivers door of a 47-51 that is on the Classic Parts site but I don't know how to transfer the photos to Stovebolt. Tim knows how but he's smart. It was posted on May 18th 2007 if you can do a search it is titled "Made driver door lock for 47-51" and is by Coilover. Have done several more but just take pics the first time around. Not a hard job but one must measure carefully.
