I painted my firewall with eastwood underhood black, after allot of prep gave it a coat, then gave another mild sanding and a second coat. I can't seem to get an even finish coat. I had a friend who has more experience painting made sure things were correct and gave it a third try better but not right? Has anyone had much luck with this product, try to figure out if it's me or the paint before I move onto test rest of my underhood painting. Also I am not using a rattle can, thanks.

I used John Deere black enamel, tough as nails, less than $10 a quart, semi-flat appearance just like factory. I even added PPG hardener, & used a little regular mineral spirits to thin slightly.

Many of our club members are sold on the following mix, and I plan on using the same when I do the hood area on my truck this winter.

1 qt. of Rustoleum gloss Black
1 qt. of rustoleum Flat Black

This equals a perfect color of UHB. You can used pints if you want a smaller amount.

Mix together and add min. sprt. as needed to thin to your liking.

Is the underhood mix different from a typical frame paint? Is the frame generally painted gloss?

A friend emailed me and also told me they now make Rustoluem in a Satin that is great.

I used the rustoluem satin black on my frame looks great, I didn't use it on my firewall thinking it would not take the heat. Sounds like it's not an issue. Now I need to decide whether to strip the eastwood paint off and do the firewall with the satin as well?

Interesting enough I saw a firewall the other day that had been sprayed with bedliner. It looked real good and according to the owner covered a multiple of scars etc.

make 2 quarts of Rustoleum Semi-Gloss?
I use Rustoleum Semi-Gloss (7798) for all my under hood Black and it holds up fine and looks very original. As a side note, in a pinch the Rustoleum Gloss Black can be baked for a few hours at around 200° and it will dull it down to a nice Satiny finish which looks about as good as the Semi-Gloss.

For those who used Rustoleom on the frame..Can I
assume you epoxy primered first?

hey slick, a few years ago i redid the inner fenders on my 73 and used epoxy primer and rustoleum flat black paint and they are still holding up today and look relativly good (that truck is beat on pretty hard in the mud and hunting season so to say they look good still is an acomplishment) as usual just my $.02

Has anyone concidered using Zero-Rust under the hood? That stuff is great and sorta has a semi-gloss appearance.

All in All it's very good, just on the price side as compared to Rustoleum.

I use POR 15 and their chassis black on a variety of parts. Just read the directions and use a disposable paint suit if spraying, because only time will remove it from your skin (about 1 week)

I am with Ron(mummdogg) on the Zero-Rust stuff. I used the black Zero-Rust on my inside finders, bottom of my firewall, radiator panel and frame. I think it has a nice satin look. I coated the underside of my cab as well as all the places I cut out and repaired patch panels in the cab. I took a brush and just soaked it down into the inside cab corners. I brushed it on all the areas behind the rocker panels I had to replace. Now I just hope it really does keep the rust away. I myself am sort of scared of the POR 15. I read in a post where one of the guys got very sick after spraying that stuff.

you have to use a mask spraying anything, especially epoxies as NO MASK = DEATH

Yeah, even with a mask, i am still scared.. It was the chance of being instantly sick that got me. Someone made the commit that your lungs did not have a drain plug.....

Of course I use a mask but I also have asthma and can't afford to get ill. I did not wear one when I was younger and sprayed a lot of enamel. I hope that does not come back to haunt me in the end.

I guess you get more worried about dieing as you get older. Or wisdom comes with age..

2 things of interest to this post. I have in-laws who restore tractors and I have helped them paint several. They use rustoleum on several colors and they blend the colors to make a few. Also they use xylol to thin it and make flow good, and they use Mar-hyde hardener (Wet-Look). Usually the ratio runs about 3/4 pot of paint, about an 1/8 a pot thinner and top it off with 2 oz hardener. (In a quart cup) I have yet to see one with discoloration near the exhaust or on the engine. They say the hardener gives the paint more durability (I don't know but it shines like hell)

The other part. Someone asked about frame priming. Rustoleum makes a rust locking primer. Its a copperish brown color. It's not anywhere in the ballpark with POR15 but it does work. Raced dirt track for years and used it. We would build a car, wipe it down with paint etcher, and spray over rust and all with the stuff. Followed by rustoleum over that. I have lots of parts and cars out on the farm, and all of them with that primer under the paint and none have not lost any paint or rusted through.

Rustoleum is good stuff for the money.

Spraying without a mask = death (either very quickly, or very painfully)

I even use a mask now with spray bombs just because aerosol gets everywhere.

I know too many people with lung problems from not wearing a mask.

also, I have used Rustoleum over POR15 as a top-coat. Worked great. Dont know how long it lasted, as I sold the truck to get a bigger down payment for the house.
