I went a looking for a new torque-tube u-joint and the Truck and Car shop couldn't make up their own minds as to whether or not their advertised 47 to 53 u-joint would fit a 54 trans. The manufacturer's book said 47 to 54 but their catalogue said only to 54. Comparing them the short yokes appear to be machined differently. Are there other changes like counter gear shaft diameter or teeth counts or anything?

The u-joints from '47.5-'54 are the same for three speed transmissions (4 speed u-joints are different from the 3-speed but are the same from '47.5-'54).
The '53 and '54 standard commercial 3-speed have a few different internal parts from earlier years but the splines on the rear of the main shaft are the same for all years.

The output shaft yoke on the new replacement looked sufficiently different from my origianl to scare me off and reuse the old one with a new torque tube yoke and trunion. So the 53 and 54 three spd trannies are the same on light duty trucks. You say there are differences between the "commercial" and the "earlier" trans. Was that earlier passenger three speed or light duty truck? I wonder if the three sped light duty truck and passenger applications were the same. Anyone care to weigh in for me. I appreciate it as I am looking for a new synchronizer gear too.
