My gas tank was almost empty. I filled it up over the weekend. Now my gauge does indicate full...but when the ignition is off it continues to register full. I thought it was supposed to indicate empty whenever the ignition is off regardless of the amount of gas in the tank. Am I correct and what is the likely problem? Thanks.
Hy bucktruck, I'm not sure what the gauge "should do" with the ignition off, but unless the gauge reading doesn't change as you drive the truck around and obviously lower the fuel level in the tank, I wouldn't worry about it.
Try sitting in the truck with the ignition off and have somebody bounce on the bumper to move the truck. If the needle moves up/down when the ignition is off then you have a wiring issue (this would mean electricity is going to your sender/gauge all the time...which would be odd, actually but isn't what you want). Otherwise I agree with 3B...wouldn't worry about it.

Did it work normally prior to your fill up? Did you make any wiring changes?

Before I filled it up it was indicating near empty. I have not changed any wiring. So, from all the above posts I guess it is working...unless it continues to register full after I drive it and know it is not full.
hi Bucktruck, which truck and gauge exactly, i don't know for sure if they all work the same way, on my 1950 truck, the gauge will go down to empty (below empty) when the power is off, the needle will slowly bottom out with gravity, if you remove the mechanism from the truck and flip it, or flip the whole truck onto the roof in a ditch, you will see the needle will fall to full position when power is removed the needle has NO spring, it is pulled to marking state between two electro magnets, and when those magnets lose power the needle should fall slowely I attached a photo showing my needle at bottomed out position
if your needle stays at full, maybe it's just sticking a bit? -s
