Can anyone recommend a tranny rebuilder for a 53 Chevy 1/2 ton 3 speed. The engine is from a 55 Chevy car so the tranny can be a 55 or a 53.
It was previously rebuilt by myself and shifts smoothly but on deceleration the tranny is noisy....
I did replace the following....cluster gear...1st and reverse idler...synchronizers...and a.small parts kit
.This was some years back and it has always been noisy. Not sure how it was before the rebuild as the truck was towed here.
I obviously missed something...I am not a professional so maybe it is time I find one....I live in CT so someone in the Northeast would be best.
Thanks.....John in CT

Try a little further back- - - - -you're most likely hearing a bad pinion bearing in the rear end.

"The transmission can be from a 53 or a 55" ??
If the truck has a closed driveline (torque tube) it would have the 53 transmission configuration.
All 55 3 speed transmissions are only used with open driveline applications including the 55 first series. Someone may have replaced the torque tube rear end at some point and installed the later transmission. This information is something a rebuilder would need to know as they are vastly different. As Jerry states, it could be something besides transmission noise.

Thank you everyone for the info....the truck has a torque tube so most likely 53 tranny.....I did order some metal treatment from the web site sent to me by "showkey" and will be using it in the differential and will post again after doing so....John in CT

Search Ebay for "liquid moly" gear lube additive. It won't repair a worn out or pitted pinion bearing, but if what you're hearing is bear noise, it might quiet things down a little. You're probably giving a brain tumor patient an aspirin for his headache, however.

It seams almost impossible to find a rebuilder for these old differentials....The correct final setup is very illusive and time consuming...᠁..
