I have a rebuilt 1961 261 in my 41 (car). Dual 2 barrel carbs, RV2 cam, headers, dual exhaust. Maybe 5000 miles on the engine.
It has the stock PCV system, which is a PCV valve at the top of the 'road draft' tube (on this system, the 'road draft' part (the part that exits downward) does not exist. It is only the 'stack' part and the PCV is at the top of that). The engine runs absolutely GREAT. I have a 5 speed behind it and get as good as 24mpg.

A few years ago I came to a hard stop (I decided at the last minute to NOT try and beat the yellow). I looked out the rear view mirror and there was a HUGE cloud of smoke. At first I thought it must have been the guy next to me, but I was the only one there. The engine continued to run just fine and it never happened again. Until last night.

Last night I came to a not-as-hard slow-down so I could take a left turn. Immediately after the turn I smell oil burning, looked in the mirror and there was the HUGE cloud of smoke again. Drove the rest of the way home just fine. No smoke.

I'm not losing any sleep over this but I am curious over what this may be. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.
Joe

PS Did I mention that this engine runs GREAT!

I've added a picture of my PCV

Slight oil leak on the valve cover on the manifold side?

Perhaps you can crawl under and check for evidence of an oil trail leading to the exh manifold or exhaust pipeing.

Lastly could the oil be slightly overfilled?

Good luck

Is the sheet metal baffle inside the crankcase under the road draft tube hole in place? It sounds like the oil in the pan is flowing forward on a hard stop and getting sucked up into the PCV system. You might try removing the draft tube and welding a big washer into the bottom of it, leaving a smaller hole for the PCV to draw its vapors through. There's no need for the PCV to have a hole over an inch in diameter to pull its air through.

Come to think of it... it was a left turn last night, which would cause the oil to move to the side of the PCV tube.

As far as I know the baffle is in place. I don't specifically recall. But I can weld a big washer to the bottom of the road draft tube. Thanks for the idea.

The round track race engines we used to build had home-brewed swinging baffle doors incorporated into the sump to keep oil from running away from the pump pickup in hard left turns. With a little ingenuity you might be able to fabricate something similar to divert the oil away from that area of the block. It doesn't sound like it's happening often enough to need a radical fix like that, and you probably don't live where Big Brother gives you 30 days in the electric chair for a little exhaust smoke!

Engine Oil Level too high?

Well, it could be. If I recall correctly, the manual calls for 6 quarts with a filter.
I do have a spin-on filter. I'm not sure that it holds an entire quart, but it is close.
I didn't have the original dip stick, so when I first filled it with oil I made marks on the dipstick at 4, 5 and 6 quarts.

I could try running it at the 5 quart level.

Thanks all.

You need to get your odometer checked too. 24 MPG? Or maybe you are buying imperial gallons from Canada?

My speedometer is 5 mph slow, but I use Garmin for my odometer. That was the best I've gotten. 65 mph, mild weather.
AC drops the mpg quite a bit.

That picture does show an oil bath cleaner, but I don't have one. Just paper filters on the 2-2barrels.
