Years ago, when my dad owned the 59, he fabricated this modification so that a simple modern day spin on oil filter could be used instead of the cartridge filter in the external filter setup.
Here's some pictures that kind of tell the story. Not exactly sure how he manged the return line to the block, but maybe you guys can tell.

Bolt the old filter wrench to the cap.

I just screw the filter in place without the lid attached.
Once I get it as snug as my fingers will allow, I put the lid on and use a wrench to give it a quarter turn to tighten.

One little mod I made today.
I destroyed one of my many magnetic retrieval tools and salvaged the earth magnet out of it. Stuck it to the end of my oil pan drain plug.
It was a little tricky going through the pan threads as it wanted to grab them until I got the plug in far enough to get past them.

Nice mod. I put a remote adapter for a spin on, on my 54 235 but I could never get a proper oil pressure reading so I took it off and run without a filter 10 years now. I might look into what your dad did.

Oil pressure gauge works perfectly with this set up by the way...

It's an interesting way to get less efficient oil filtering. The media in a full flow filter has such a loose weave that it lets a lot of stuff flow through that the original filter would trap. Now, if you could adapt a spin-on Diesel fuel filter to an original-equipment housing like that, you'd be able to combine the advantages of a spin-on filter and the fine-particle filtering usually associated with a bypass filter.
