hi, new to the site and just bought a new project. i'm not a total novice but, i'm no seasoned pro so please keep that in mind.

i'm working on a 1951, 3100 chevy panel with a 235 in it from 1957. its a 4 spd, 420 transmission (i think).

i am doing a rebuild on the motor and want to "hop it up a bit" but it will be a daily driver so dependability is important.

based on almost everything i've read, it seems the best way to do this is with a dual carb set up, headers, dual exhaust, and a "mild" cam.
i found a vintage NOS ebelbrock mainifold with 2 zenith 228s which i purchased. i also have a new set of fenton headers and a local shop to build the exhaust. my question is in regards to the cam. can anyone make a suggestion as to what cam would be a good choice?

also, any other ideas or suggestion would be welcome.

thanks!

Welcome to Stovebolt.com, doobs,

The 54-63 Chevrolet truck's 261 engines' cam has a modified lift compared to earlier high-pressure 235 engines. I do not know when that cam became standard in the 235 engines. Maybe someone else knows.

The Zenith 228 was used in many applications, over many years. What engine were they originally used on?

You might be able to find variable jets for those 228s, If they are for a 228 GMC, with the variable jets they might match up OK with a 235 - but, they also might be "too much carbs".

Based on everything I've experienced since the mid-1950's, you'll have a very nice looking engine compartment that will get a lot of awed comments from uninformed people who think all that eye candy actually accomplishes something. It will run almost as well as it did before you started tinkering with it. Put an Elgin E-293-S camshaft in it with a new set of solid lifters and do a good engine overhaul in the process. Then sell the dual carb setup and the headers to somebody who thinks they'll actually do some good, and you'll probably come close to breaking even on the cost. You'll also have a better running truck that is much more reliable.

Welcome to Stovebolt. Since your question concerns modifications to a I-6 and the guys that are into modified engines hang out in the HiPo forum, you might want to post your modified engine questions there. Some old time drag racers will have some advice other than HRL’s poo poo of your project. Not saying he’s wrong because he’s not, but you’ve already bought the parts so you might as well have some fun with it.🛠
