If you are wanting to retain a two barrel:

There is NO better two barrel carb for your engine!

if you wish to change (not necessarily an upgrade for a stock 265 engine) to a four barrel:

(1) a stock Chevrolet 283 four barrel intake with the Rochester 4-Jet that would be original for a 283

OR

(2) same manifold as above with a Carter 9400s or 9410s (requires a 1/4 inch fiber spacer)

OR

(3) aftermarket four barrel intake with either the Carter 9400s or 9410s

OR

(4) same as (1) but Carter WCFB for 283 (EXPENSIVE because of all the Corvette restorers)

Sorry, but NO recommendation for a NEW carb for your engine.

Jon.

What is the reason for wanting to swap carbs? Is yours worn out or damaged in some way? Ditto on Jon's comment about the Rochester 2 BBL- - - -unless you're planning to do some sort of high RPM racing, there's absolutely no reason to change carbs.

The Rochester I have is giving me problems. The auto choke it had has been swapped to manual but it doesn't work. The flap won't move and seems to be stuck.Thought instead of paying for carb to be refurbished I could put the cash into a new carb.I'm in the UK and was struggling to find anyone who can sort the Rochester.I cant see any I'D numbers other than what looks like GM8 5812 which is cast into the bottom.

OK - I better understand your issue, as your carb would be an expensive rebuild with the wrong choke, and probaby a warped airhorn, so, more information.

If you have a passenger vehicle:

A/T - Rochester tag number 7008004
S/T - Rochester tag number 7008005

Carter replacement carb for A/T 2286s
Carter replacement carb 2286s was superceded by 3714s

That choke has a vacuum assist piston which has a habit of getting gummed up and preventing the choke blade from moving. It's an easy fix- - - -after taking the choke cover off (and replacing it with a correct bimetal spring cover if possible) soak the piston and its associated linkage with spray carburetor cleaner, and gently work the linkage back and forth until things free up. Another problem is with the choke heater tubing. It was supposed to draw air through a tube that passes through the exhaust manifold. The tube can rust out and allow exhaust gas, not clean air, to enter the choke housing. That causes carbon buildup and sticky parts. The fix for that is to plug off the passage in the exhaust manifold and wrap a few turns of copper tubing around the exhaust pipe to provide the choke with clean hot air.

It's also possible to adapt an electric-heated choke cover from a later model Rochester carb and eliminate the hot air pipe altogether, but it takes some tinkering and modifying to make it work.

Jerry is absolutely correct IF the pull off piston is the culprit.

However, one issue with the Rochester 2G series (NOT Rochester's fault) is that some "mechanics" have the idea that the air cleaner must be tightened as tight as can be accomplished using a 12 inch adjustable end wrench (31 cm adjustable spanner). This pulls the air cleaner support in the airhorn, which warps the airhorn such that the choke plate will not move. Important to determine if your issue is the warp or the piston.

Jerry's method of wrapping copper tubing around the exhaust manifold will work, and you being in the UK, might be the easiest solution; however, here is another solution:

EDIT: Ugh - the same filter that consistently converts venturi to venture, converted cm to mm! Thanks, Jerry, now correct units!

Wouldn't that 1 1/4" long adjustable spanner be a little hard to grip? Now a 31 CM wrench would be a lot handier, although still inappropriate for the job!

Just yanking yer chain, Jon! LOL!

Many of the 265 2 barrel truck carburetors had governors. If you do not want/need a governor, any of the above should work well for you.
