My GMC is registered as a '51. Looking at the charts I've found for serial numbers I think that is correct but I'm not sure. I'm new to these trucks but I also thought that they went to a push button door handle after '51. Did they use those door handles late in the run maybe? Set me straight! smile

Door handles were sort of interchangeable so I wouldn’t go off door handles only. I might be wrong (and I am frequently) but your SN might indicate ‘52. One of our numbers gurus will be along shortly. 🛠

Here is a useful ID link from Rob English's excellent old GMC website:

101 = 1/2 ton 100 series short bed
22 = 228 GMC engine
S = St. Louis assembly plant
6788 = sequence/production number = this code was on 1951 trucks of this size/model
http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/page0015.html

This would have been a relatively early 1951 101-model - they might have still had the old doors/handles, or, the doors might have been replaced?

Thank you. This is the site I was looking at but was having trouble with the production number and which year it meant. I'll join that group also...

The vin indicates an early '51 but the door handles indicate '52 or later. I see deluxe window trim on the doors but not the windshield. That could mean swapped doors. The truck has been repainted at some point. Running boards should be black.

I agree, you can't identify the year based on interchangeable parts. That's why a tag was fastened. Your left rear fender is not original either.

Or someone did a good job using the template to cut the fender. Either way the side mount was introduced in 53, iirc,

Since '51 was still a turndown door handle (with wind wings), I'd love to see the strikers to see how they adapted the '52-'53 push button doors.

Will 47-51 latches fit on 52-54 doors?
