Occasionally, under heavy load (going fast and letting off the gas or declining a steep hill) the transmission lever physically slips into neutral. What gives? Not a huge deal... I just put it back in and go on down the road.

1950 suburban 3 on the tree and original Small "peanut" three speed transmission. (sorry I don't know the official name of the transmission)

Check the linkages for wear , after that , the wear is in the g/box.
I have found the thrust washer behind 2nd gear worn , selector forks worn , bearings worn , syncro hub worn and all of these combine to tossing the car out of gear , not hard to fix , just difficult to find all the NOS parts .

........I dont know what any of that means. Oh boy. I need to get a cutaway with descriptions once I figure out the technical name of my transmission.

Plus worn needle bearings in the clutch gear. An updated clutch gear with a double row of needle bearings fixed a lot of the popping out of third issues.

Unfortunately, that little transmission "wears out all over". Some of our customers back in the 1950's insisted on installing new, not rebuilt transmissions in Chevy cars and trucks. After several attempts at rebuilding them, I can understand why they felt that way. The saying the oldtimers in our shop had was "Ford transmissions break- - - -Chevvies wear out!"

If everything checks out in the transmission, it could be an alignment problem.
I have a blog post on this topic. Link to blog post.
