Seeing a post elsewhere on the forums got me thinking. Has anyone added backup lights to an AD? Mine has the old 4 speed trans, so I don't see how a switch could be installed, but back up lights would sure be handy! Maybe a toggle switch on the dash? But awfully easy to forget and leave them on, I imagine.

I am currently digging back in to a 1953 3800 (one ton) with a nine foot bed. I've owned it since 1979, and drove it until 1982 (or so). My wife got me involved in restoring it back in 2002, got the body removed and the frame redone, then things came up. Now I am retired and starting again. If anyone is interested I have photos on Imagur ( https://timwhiteblues.imgur.com/ ). I live way back in the woods in the Ozarks on 40 acres at the end of a 2 1/2 mile private road.

The paddle and switch shown in Tim's 3rd link is very hard to find. Can be fabricated.

There is a toploader for sm420 in eBay right now. It is a 67 cover with a switch

We ad back up lamps all the time to the 30's,40's & early 50's trucks.

We use the Guide NOS 4 speed shifter paddle switches along with an assortment of era correct flush mounted or rear bumper bracket mounted lamp assemblies.

Recently saw a truck with back up lights. They were mounted to the bumper brackets. And he used motorcycle lamps. It was nice and clean installation.

I used a red lighted toggle switch I got from Pep Boys. And the lights are LED from off ebay. I don't particulary like the way they look, (too modern) but they light up like a pair of headlights to the rear! Couldn't find any lights I liked, so I used these. I needed them right away, when I visit friends for dinner, and leave after dark, they have several dogs I have to be careful of!

capnduane, I really like those lights. On my one ton the rear bumper sits so far behind the fenders that I could mount them out to the side. And the idea of a lighted switch (to let you know they're on?) sounds really good. If you have numbers for those send them along.

Here's a set that comes with a bracket mount like mine have. The switch I used lights up when you turn it on.

Did mine a few years ago. Switch is threaded into the SM420 so each time you put the truck in reverse, what happens? ;-)

I've seen a couple of trucks with two small LED pocket flashlights adapted to fit into the rolled top of the bed sides. Those things put out a lot more light than their small size suggests they can.

As Jerry said, there are lighting kits available (somewhere), but are not flashlights. I thought about using them as auxiliary lights since the "stock" lights I used were not very bright.

Another quality post.

My rear turn signal lamps are now located right below the rolled tops of the bed side panels.
