The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline Brake cylinder recommendations please

I was looking at a parts supplier on line , they offered front cyls for the '37 truck at $57 each , that seemed ok ish , but then I saw rock auto had the same item (apparently) at $17 .

Question , is the rockauto product line reliable ?

Hy Dusty, I have purchased a few master cylinders from RockAuto so far so good.

Rock Auto is normally good about showing which cylinders are USA. All the ones I've bought from them lately have been made in China, but that is just because they didn't have what I needed in sets (USA made). I haven't had trouble with things I've bought from them. Please keep in mind, Rock Auto makes nothing nor sells anything under their name (to my knowledge). They sell cylinders made by Raybestos, Delco, etc...

Also, unless your old cylinders are worn past the point, you might be able to hone and rebuild them. Years ago there was quite a cottage industry of people re-sleeving wheel and master cylinders but I don't see many of those guys anymore.

I picked up my 4 slave and a master cylinder for my 49 from NAPA a few years ago. The slave cylinders were on the shelf and they had to order the master. Also got my shoes there.
NAPA stocks a lot of parts for old vehicles. Don't count them out.

Rockauto is my first choice for parts, if they have them at the best price (including shipping).

I recently bought wheel cylinder and a master cylinder kits from RockAuto. They gave great service and prices. The boxes said made in Mexico but the parts inside said made in USA!

Just because you order products with an old reliable American name, doesn't mean that you'll get American made products. Many (most) old manufacturers now have at least some of their stuff made overseas. Still, I feel that their quality control is probably better, and I try to stick with good brand names. Recently I ordered all new wheel cylinders (Raybestos). Sadly the Raybestos boxes say made in China on them. I hope they'll be OK. Time will tell.

Once a holding fixture to mount the brake cylinder in a lathe is fabricated, the actual boring/sleeving process is pretty simple. Making that first fixture accurately can be quite a challenge, however!
