Is there any reason to "seal" the bolts screwed into something like a differential. Or do we rely on the bolt stretching and sealing the threads.

I'm wanting to use a little pipe sealer in my threads.

Sorry to ask Stupid questions. I've been a Electrician for too long.

Normally no sealant is required. Most bolt holes do not go through into the liquid storage area. In other words they are a blind hole. Those that do go all the way through are sealed when torqued to specs.🛠

On my two differentials the bolt holes that hold the differential to the housing and the rear cover extend into the inside environment. It is common to see lock washers on these bolts and they do not seal. However the hypoid fluid is pretty thick.

RTV silicone is good for these situations.

'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed.
'55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.
