So I brought the 38 1-1/2 ton home. The original paint is 99% gone leaving a nice desert rusted patina which I kind of like since that is the way I remember this truck as a kid. So I’m wondering about spraying the whole
truck exterior and frame with a rust converter like Corroseal to stop further rusting and leave it at that. Does anyone have experience with these products? Will it leave a reasonable rust like final finish or will it wind up splotchy and a weird color? Are there other reasons I may not want to do this?

Rust converters such as Corroseal will not leave it as is. It dries black. Some guys will wipe the vehicle with mineral oil. It is only temporary and you have to keep treating it. The best option is to clear coat it. I am sure others will have different opinions.

Do a search for "Shark Hide".

I have not used this product, but I've heard good things about it. Check it out and see if it might work for you.

DO NOT USE RUST CONVERTOR TO PRESERVE THE PATINA!!!!!!!!! It will turn black and remove what, if any, paint is left on it.! I know first hand........ruined a perfectly good patina on a '54 I once had. JMO dang

Thanks for the responses. I’ll avoid the rust converter.

If the truck is 80 years old, and you like it the way it is, then don't mess with it. Anything and everything you do to it will take away from the natural patina you have. Tons of guys are looking to fake that look and it ends up looking like crap, so why would you (or anyone) want to mess with it.

In short, it took 80 years to get to look like that, what exactly do you think you are "saving".

Your truck, your call.

While there are some that like the patina look and Gas Monkey seemed to make it a mainstay. But it really must look good and the truck or car needs to be in excellent running order.
