For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 23 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 23 | Just installing my new bed on the 40 and with the bed sides sitting on the cross members and wooden blocks and rubber shim the gap between the bed and apron is tight. When I lift the box to install the wood ( 3/4" thick) under the corner strips, the gap between the apron and bed is that 3/4". Running boards hang down approx 1/2" under cab. Should I shim the running boards to narrow the gap or strech the bed aprons to match. I'm about to mount my fenders and only want ot put one set of holes in the new bed sides, know what I mean?! Thanks in advance | | | | | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 1,312 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2004 Posts: 1,312 | Don't assume the wood blocks under the cross rails are necessarily correct height. I bought a set from Jim Carter that are OK front and midway, and 3/4" short at the rear sill. The apron piece has a notch to fit around the bump on the lower cab. With wood blocks in place, gap between apron and underside of box lip is about 1/2" on mine. Top of running boards come up just under the lip of the apron piece. If you put new blocks under cab, these may be a little off as well. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 23 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 23 | I have new blocks for the cab as well and had thought about cutting the blocks down ( and dipping them in preservative). I have looked over lots of pictures of the 40 trucks and the running board seems quite tight to the cab. There were no bed blocks left when I got the truck so I am unsure wether the wood blocks are the right height. I will measure several more times before I decide to cut anything. THanks for your imput ( you don't have any shots of yours finished by chance, showing the gap ?) | | | | | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 1,312 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: May 2004 Posts: 1,312 | Mine is at same stage as yours I think. Have had bed on to measure. Currently finishing off bed boards. Should have bed permanently mounted later next week. Can send you shots then. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 23 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 23 | I'll look forward to some pictures. I am busy trying to get mine ready to go out for painting. I am trying to mock it all up on one frame ( hot rod/ 383 ci stroker on propane/ 4L60/ NP 207 transfer case ) but will switch it all to another stock frame so the painter will have a rolling chassis. Then I can get on with the truck frame and get it done. I am torn about using the wood deck with our BC wet weather ( mine will be a daily driver) but thought of using 1/8" plate Line-X'ed on the bottom to minimize squeaks against the cross members etc , and once the truck is painted, line-X the whole bed for durability. Be interested in anyones thoughts. Are you in Vancouver area Bruce? | | |
