I’m trying to learn how to work on my Dad’s truck and I’m having a brake issue. Brake lines are new and brakes were working fine. Normally, They only have to push the brake pedal down about halfway before brakes start to engage. Today I got in it and backing out of the driveway I had to push the pedal all the way at to the floor for the truck to stop. What should I check first? | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,101 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 2,101 | Check the fluid in the master cylinder, if it is low you may have a leak somewhere. If no leaks are found, there is a good probability the brake shoes are out of adjustment. Fred

When that happens the pedal gets low. That's particularly true if you're dealing with pre-1951 "Huck" brakes. It takes several adjustments to maintain correct pedal height until the shoe contour matches the drums. Bendix brakes aren't as bad about it, but people who have grown up with self-adjusting drum brakes, or discs have forgotten (or never knew) about adjusting brakes. Jerry
