Hey guys, I bought this transmission (with a receipt that it was rebuilt at a machine shop) and once it was filled, we noticed oil on the floor. Tracked it back to coming out of this tiny hole. The hole is below the fill plug level.
Is it supposed to be there? Can/should/how I plug it? Will plugging it cause the case to build pressure and blow out elsewhere?
That's what it is. The person that installed the pin probably drove it in too far or it is possibly undersized. You could drain the oil and try to clean the area real well and apply some gasket sealer or JB weld. Fred

The only way to properly clean it is to drain the oil, since one can never remove all the oil, then place it upside down do no oil can possibly drain back, flush it with acetone many times, alcohol also can be used, until no possibility of oil, then apply some kind of epoxy in several layers, it would be OK if some drained into the case, just so it could be removed. Or, one could drill it out, tap it, insert a screw and epoxy.

The reverse idler is in a difficult place to get to as the pin goes into the idler shaft through the case. No direct access to the pin. The reverse idler is the first gear to be installed for assembly and the last to be removed for disassembly. The pin is driven all the way into the the shaft and the shaft is then pushed out through an expansion plug on the front of the trans. Hopefully you can get it clean enough to seal it up without having to disassemble the trans. Fred

Thanks guys for your invaluable input and knowledge! It was in fact a factory hole for a pin that was pushed in a touch too far. A thorough wash n rinse with brake and parts cleaner and scrub then a dab of JB Weld did the trick!
