The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area The Electrical Bay Ammeter going to discharge?

Well last week or so while driving my ol' 55 to work in the wee hours I have noticed my ammeter discharging. Even though its been a little dark in the morning I have ocasionally popped the hood and wrapped on the voltage regulator with and old piece of almond wood. I have seen this done in the past by some old farmers I know and believe it or not she starts a charging. I'm sure some of you Bolters have run across this situation before. Would this be the air gap sticking from the current or relay? It is the 12 volt with a generator and regulator. Thanks there Bolters.

After rappin a little bit on the regulator she's been a runnig fine even though I know the rappin is just a band aid....

Yes, I received your PM, and answered it. Try checking your "Preferences" tab on the forum to see if you're set up properly to send and receive messages. My email is also accessible from my profile if you'd rather communicate that way. The diagnosis procedure for a 3-unit regulator is fairly complicated and it involves making some voltage checks and other procedures.

There are three magnetic coils under that cover, a "cutout relay", a "current regulator" and a "voltage regulator". the points of each of these units can be cleaned and adjusted, but do not attempt to do anything (even removing the regulator cover) without disconnecting one of the battery cables. An unintentional short can fry the regulator almost instantly.
