I was looking at the ignition coil on my 50 235 after finding burnt points on a failed initial start. My truck has been converted to 12 volts which is what I measure on the coil primary wire. The coil is cracked on the bottom, and if it had oil in it it's gone. The coil says it's a universal 6 volt with no resistor needed. Picked up a 12 volt coil, but it is too big to fit in the coil mount,. So what coil, and, or ballast resistor should I try and find? The coil I have measures 1.4 ohms, and the 12 volt replacement read like 3.7 ohms. Thanks
Or, even though far from original, maybe I should I just go HEI, and eliminate several issues? My vacuum advance leaks, and the distributor wiggles on it own anyway. Does anyone have a small diameter HEI brand they would recommend for less than a MSD distributor???
This is what I've installed. I've only run my 261 for short periods before assembly and haven't fine tuned it yet but this distributor from Tom installed easily, looks great, got me up and running quickly. I'm excited to see how the engine performs once my truck is on the road finally.
I used the square coil and had to build a little bracket to hold it on the side of the head. Not quite stock looking but I'm happy with it. Here is a quick video of my engine's first start up. You can see the bracket near the end when I shut it off.

Get a 12V coil and a ballast resistor and a bigger clamp/mount. Instructions are in our tech tip section. "Electrical/12V conversion". Coil: O'Reilly's 38-9084 or equivalent. Coil Clamp: O'Reilly's 9777 or equivalent. Ballast Resistor: O'Reilly's 2-5214 or equivalent. Do you know how to incorporate the "bypass" system for above parts? Do you have a foot start, key start or button start?
HEI is good but not necessary. Do it later after truck runs good and no burnt points.
I've wasted a few billion electrons on this subject. The forum search function is your friend!
