Installing gauges finally in my '48 today and after installing the cluster gauge I thought the speedometer would be a real snap.
"Wrong"

It turns out that the passenger/right side bolt on the Column support bracket was too long to install the gauge. I reused the exact same bolts too! (at least I thought I did)
I dug around and found another shorter bolt and it clears the bottom of the speedometer case but not by much.

Has anyone else ever ran into this issue or is something off center for me? The steering column and 3 on the tree line up dead center in the dash cut out but the speedometer seems to be closer to the column than the cluster gauge.

I think it's time for an adult beverage after lying on my back a good part of the day.

Thanks
Jeff

This is not my truck, but "yea" the gauges don't center up with the column, wow!
And I discovered this the hard way, surprised I didn't notice this mis-alignment earlier!

All the thousands of hours I have stared at those gauges and I never noticed it.

Do you have the spacers (washers) which go between the top bracket half and the bottom of the dash? They often get misplaced. They will take up the extra length which is getting in your way.

Yes the spacers are installed. I'm starting to think some where in the truck's earlier years the bolts I thought were
original were replaced.

Here's a picture of my big bolt, don't think the columns ever been removed, so factory style if it helps.

You can see in this photo before the option of the column shift 1947- early 48 truck period there is no hump. There is a different bracket assembly as well. The column support nuts are square and fit in a recess to provide clearance (tight).

Once the column shift was introduced the bracket, dash all changed.

Brackets showing correct nuts/washers. Often if the original, un-modified bolts are in place and you loosen them without liberal let-go being used, they turn or snap. If they turn, they often damage the column support under the dash. This area collects a lot of dirt and moisture over the years. On the end of the bracket you can see, adjustment and tabs which get damaged.

Here you can also see the difference in the gauge clamp brackets, early gauges are unique.

Another column support bracket, this unique to the COE models.

This is the 54-55 1st version, cost saving in all it's glory here.
