Need to clean the steering wheel (original) on my 38. Getting sticky black stuff on it in some areas. What is best to clean it with? Should it be coated with anything after cleaning?

Mine wasn't sticky yet but sure left a black grime on my hands just the old tractor steering wheels on the farm.
This is what I did:
I filed open slightly all the cracks in my wheel and cleaned them. Next, I sealed all the cracks with a heavy duty epoxy. I sanded it all smooth and then shot an industrial epoxy primer to seal it. Next, I painted it with a compatible industrial topcoat. It turned out great. Mind you, I haven't driven the truck with it yet.

Sanding that wheel was a dirty, long process.

That sticky black stuff is the actual steering wheel material coming off. It is worse during wet weather or when your hands are sweaty. You need some paint.

Thanks. Think I will clean it good with some Simple Green and repaint.

I did like Fox did, and then used JB epoxy putty. Then 3or4 coats of black Rustoleum. I added a 18in black wrap from off ebay and its been good for 5 years and counting.
