Hi bolters! Just got my vacuum wiper motor back from Ficken wiper service who did a total rebuild. Motor works like a dream! Thought it was going to wipe a hole in the window! I highly recommend the "Wiperman"!

kthomas, curious what the cost was for the wiper motor rebuild? Also when I picked up my 53 Suburban, I think the engine had been changed to a 235. There is no vacuum anywhere that I can see, including for the vacuum advance or wipers. Anyone know where to pull vacuum from :confused: ?

Krissy 1, The rebuild cost $59.00 + $5.00 S&H. Not bad for a motor that works! On your vacuun question, there should be a brass fitting on the intake manifold just below the carberator that the vacuum line fits on. Do you have that?

There is a 5/8" fitting, but it has a hose connected and runs up and into the top of the valve cover.

well that hose would go to run your wiper motor someone used it to suck the crank case blowby

Is there another fitting? My fitting is just a 90 deg elbo. Should there be a fitting with connections for my vacuum advance, crankcase and my wipers? I don't know how to post a photo on the forum, but could email one if that would help someone help me. Maybe someone could post a photo of there intake manifold at the base of the carb. showing the fitting with vacuum attached?

Just wondering why you decided to have your motor rebuilt? Was it not working at all? What'd you do to determine you needed a rebuild?
On my Pontiac when I turn the wipers on, they go up halfway and stop. They don't go down until I turn the switch off. I was thinking things just might be gummed up here and there. Lord knows the cable going to switch on motor was gummed up!

Hi David (mugsy), no the motor didn't want to work at all. I tore it apart and inspected it, but it wasn't all gummed up like they get. It looked good, but was dry. I put some light lube in it and put it back togather. I checked the vacuum on the truck, and it had plenty. I checked the torque on the manifold bolts and it was good, but the motor just wouldn't work the wipers. If yours is just going halfway up, and stopping, and you have to turn the knob to make then go back to rest position, then I feel that you should consider having yours rebuilt also. After so many years, these old motors get tired. It was the best $64.00 I ever spent. My wipers work great now, and the motor has a 3 year warranty. Not too long ago I sent the motor from my wife's 50 Chevy truck to Jim Carter for to exchange for a rebuilt one. It cost me $52.00. However, it still don't work very good. They say that they clean them up, lube them, and replace some parts. Ficken wiper repair replaces the paddle inside. I think that makes a big difference. Since mine works so good, I am going to send her motor to Ficken, that I got from Jim Carter and have them rebuild it.
