It started with a story from my Dad...

My Grandpa was a volunteer firefighter in the '40s. He opened a GM Buick dealership around 1949. Knowing the need for a new Pumper / Engine, he got a new 1951 GMC 9700 Bickle Seagrave for the town. Well, Dad tracked down the fate of that truck to being stripped of its fire body and becoming a mobile hoist, and then its final scrapping years ago.

So having the bug in my mind, and thoughts of working with my aspiring mechanic son, I started looking for something like it. It took a couple of years but on kijiji I finally found it, just before Christmas 2015: a 1952 Chevy 1700 Bickle Seagrave. That was so close I figured it'd fit the bill. A friend flat-towed it home for us with a 1-ton Chevy. It was running decent (so I thought) but no brakes, so the game was set.

The truck was mainly original, with most of its equipment as well. It was built in Oshawa, ON, the sent to Woodstock's Bickle Seagrave Fire Truck plant. It served near Sudbury from 1953 to about 1965. Then it went up to Temagami to work at a mine. Some modifications were done there, such as moving the suction hoses to over the hose bed and adding an equipment rack on its side. Some mechanical work was done as well like changing over to 12v negative ground and including the motor swap from the 248 or 270 to a 292 I believe.

So back to our challenges. Over the winter we removed the hydroboost and master cylinder, both of which weren't too bad, but did need rebuilding. Got the parking brake shoes relined and had to replace locks due to no keys. Replaced a brake line and repaired a bunch of wiring and seized up switches and parts. Had to repair most light sockets, and replace the alternator. A few other bits and she was ready for her safety to get her in the road.

In Ontario, with a ownership showing unfit (PO didn't transfer her as road worthy), you can't get a temporary permit, so she was flat towed again, this time behind my 1/2 ton Chevy. After a week waiting for the mechanic to get to her, I had my certificate and promptly got a fit registration and plates.

We're driving now. So, as she gets moving more, it became apparent the motor wasn't quite right. She was leaving a nice blue cloud behind her and was gutless up hills. Well the summer held lots more work, from a complete re-wire to lots of polishing. A few car shows and kids events were where she shined though. Through these she earned the name "Old Smokey" due to the bug repellent cloud behind her. But the motor was not fairing well. During a drive for gas, Old Smokey's motor gave up. A chain tow back home and opening up the pan found 1 and 2 main bearings in ribbons, a broken push rod and lots of filings in the oil.

So the season was over early. But now we had the challenge of removing the motor. After some research and finding the cost savings of doing it myself fairly low compared to the headaches I expected, my son and I decided to remove it and deliver it to a shop with lots of inline experience.

Over the winter, we got the motor back in, rebuilt the carb and had her ready for spring or so I thought. Come warmer weather, a few more things were found. A tiny leak in the fuel line. An improperly jetted carb. Forgot to gap points right. Bad battery.

But Old Smokey's running great now. Not that things are over. Lots more to do for my son and I, but that's half the fun!

16.05.08 fixed wiring and switch for under hood siren. Worked on bulb for roof flasher, customized 1157 (originally 1507), all ready for new bulb. Took for drive and fuel run.
16.05.15 brought to Firehall did oil n filter. Fram PH8 filter (little too long) and 10w40 diesel engine oil. Reinstalled heater fan, but not wired. Tried roof flasher light, flange backwards. Found Speedo out of gear (hi / low)
16.05.20 drove to transit garage to show Kris. Down position on Speedo gear is low range. Speedo hundreds clicked over with tens. ( went to 110 miles when should've been 010)
16.05.22 polishing cab; changed oil in rear end, tranny and pump. Rear axle dirty very fine brass metallic, tranny like a chocolate milkshake, pump chocolate milk. Mileage 15115. Underhood siren stopped working. Removed roof floodlight. Signals intermittent and shorting. Picked up new bulbs for signal indicator and a battery shut off switch. $13.54, and installed.
16.05.29 truck to our house. Polished drivers side. Removed signal switch for rewire. cleaned cabin. Used RTV sealant on passenger window to sash, freed vent window. Partially pounded out drivers rear fender and checker plate.
16.05.31 reinstalled signal switch rec'd order from Bill's... wiring harness park & tail light gaskets and headliner. $369.28
16.06.01 brought to house for fuse & cleaning for school car show. Replaced front RT park light gasket and rear LT taillight gasket. Wouldn't start. Found bad ignition coil. picked one ($61.01) up along with new plugs ( F44T AC Delco) installed after show.
16.06.02 took truck to Sanderson Centre for Fort McMurray fundraiser.
16.06.04 truck out to pig roast, washed.
16.06.05 truck to Navy League car show, wife drove it in with friend. Lots kids all over it. Talked with body shop owner, re finish, his opinion stay with polishing and then wax. Clear it can also be done, don't repaint. Tried using heater fan, resistor seemed to start burning. Won 'best in show' judged by cadets. Took all of them for two laps around building. Took officers for ride around few blocks. Found roof leaks at wires from lights. Drove home n parked.
16.06.18 removed beacon light and flasher siren for roof check, found heavy rust with minor perforations under beacon, original paint under flasher siren. Truck had been burgundy. Cleaned rust with drill and wire brush.
16.06.11 took for fuel run.
16.06.12 - 17 brought to house to work on. Replaced flasher siren with new sealing washers and used gasket sealer for wires. Used body filler to repair roof under beacon. Cast beacon dome then urethaned inside dome. Replaced without bottom rubber to allow breathing space. Split nut from right front fender signal rebuild using lamp threaded tubing. Found original paint here also. Installed front section of headliner.
16.06.18 Participated in Piston Pushers cruise night. Truck ran really rough first mile or so. Then back to smokey but not bad. Lots of interest. Talked with old school mechanic regarding motor work. Suggested oil seals, distributor parts. Probably will be best to pull motor and rebuild this fall. Correct any and all issues. Drive back to farm headlights seem to intermittently short causing sputtering and high charge current. Drove mostly with only parking lights and with son escorting out of town.

52vff, thank you for posting this. For years it has seemed almost "taboo" for some to post the dollar amounts of what they do/buy/sell. I think most of us realize that things depends on availability, location and what a person is willing to pay. Sometimes one may not post "money" as they may be made to feel they paid to much or that they stole it! I think we do ourselves an injustice when we do not pass on info because "Knowledge is the Best Resource" I was taught at an early age that the more info you have the better the decision you can make........I'll admit that those who do not share my opinion are entitled to their privacy.
Thank you for sharing.

Achipmunk, I debated before starting wether to include costs, but felt many would appreciate the info, even if it is Canadian dollars, eh! I also respect those that would rather not share that info. And now the next installment...
16.06.22-23 replaced both headlight wiring harnesses, some bared spots were found. My son and a friend checked compression: 4=30 psi, 5=50 psi, others OK (120 to 130 psi). I checked, cap, rotor, points and condenser need replacing. Should also add ignition resistor.
16.06.24 picked up new cap, rotor, points, condenser, valve cover gasket from Carquest ($63.13) Talked with classic vehicle mechanic, picked up Lucas Oil oil additive ($22). Told him compression numbers, he thinks probably rings still, but keep trying what we're doing, try additive.
16.06.25 replaced cap, rotor, condenser, points, estimated points gap. Truck running much better, smoother with more power. Took friend for ride, person out for walk stopped me to tell me it has loud gear (rear end he thinks?) Noise. Took to fire hall, filled with some water, tanks holds no problem. Drove it back to farm. Headlights still have issue.
16.06.26 replaced wiring to right rear signal, both rear floodlights. Removed all dash emergency light switches, one broke. Disconnected all side marker lights from low beam circuit, but no chance to test.
16.06.29 bought light bulbs for taillights, fuse blocks princess auto. Brought truck home, replaced left rear signal wiring.
16.06.30 re & re main wiring harness. Completed install of main harness except all signal lights, taillights, and stop lamps.
16.06.31 - 07.03 completed rewiring, except rooftop siren, dome light, horn ( wires good). Skipped side marker lights for now. Found heater fan not working again. Polished and waxed passenger side of cab.
16.07.04 picked up fuses, connectors, wire loom, marker lights for driver's side. $70.33 @ princess auto. Installed loom on taillight wires, markers installed but not yet wired.
16.07.06 rewired rear and mid side marker lights - tapped into taillights wiring.
16.07.07 rewired front side markers - brought leads right to taillights stud on fuse box. Polished and waxed drivers front fender.
16.07.08 bought switches for emergency equipment, LED markers for passengers side. $66.03 bought wood for hosebed. $122
16.07.09-10 reworked signals into new harness. Polished and waxed drivers side, cab done except roof. Replaced hosebed, all new 5/4 Brown pressure treated wood ripped to 2 3/4 wide. Loaded all hose to driver's side under hard suction.
16.07.17 picked up new inline fuel filter $5.41, reset points to spec (.018). Attempted to replaced auxiliary cooler to thermostat rad hose, couldn't bend new without kinking, cleaned inside ends of existing and reinstalled. Hard to start until fuel filter filled, then ran rough, backfired etc. Returned truck to barn.
16.07.21 friend reset points visually, to 'where they spark'. Claims Running much better. Wife working on old jeans denim seat cover.
16.07.22 took for drive. Reset points larger gap probably about .035" much better. Washed and installed new ball for valve pull (painted rubber ball) truck ready for powerfest
16.07.23 Brantford Powerfest show. Well reviewed, not great exposure.
16.07.24 took for drive, fuelled and returned to barn.
16.08.... running really rough, found debris in fuel system.
16.08.08 Friend and son cleaned out fuel system, took for fuel run... oil pressure dropped out to ZERO. Motor runs but noisy.
16.08.14 son n I removed oil pan found chunk of pushrod, shavings and number 1 and 2 bearings coming out past con rods as ribbons.
16.08.... removed front grille and radiator and found sticker on rad 'serviced by Armstrong Body Shop New Liskard.'
16.08.25 removing equipment on / around motor prep for removal.
16.08.27 removing last of 'accessories', started prepping motor for removal.
16.08.28 got motor rest of the way out and brought to house on hoist. Brought all other loose parts home as well.
16.08.29 stripped motor of all 'accessories'

16.08.30 Dropped motor off at Kraushaar Machine Services for complete rebuild. $1000 deposit, quoted $3000 complete.
16.09.... cleaning all engine bay parts left at home. Rebuilt and rewired parking lights, polished grille assembly. Found Right Rear axle seal leaking.
16.09.21 motor all checked out and being machined / reassembled. Dropped off distributor and intake/exhaust manifold.
16.09.... cleaned up engine bay. Unable to source flexible vacuum lines, repaired using SAP tape.
16.09.30 picked up motor from Kraushaar Machine Services, Tillsonburg complete rebuild, finished.$3840.68 w/ taxes due to couple extra parts, service distributor, machine intake and exhaust.
16.10.02 removed top of transmission, to inspect. corrosion on some teeth, no other obvious signs of damage. Front bearing allowing input shaft to deflect tiny bit, rear seal leaking.
16.10.03 carb kit, air filter, exhaust studs, carb fuel filter. From Gales. $62
16.10... 'dressed' engine, trying to source replacement rad hoses.
16.10.10&11 reinstalled engine, bolted up to transmission.
16.10.13 son n I reinstalled most parts on engine. Changed transmission oil, was mildly milky but otherwise fine
16.10.... completing reinstall all equipment for starting motor. Temporarily installed (cheap CTC $??? Tachometer with tape to steering column.
16.10.29 installed everything, checked electrical. Couldn't quite line up exhaust.
16.10.30 Son bolted up exhaust. Friend came over to help break in run. Started but would only run with spray in carb. Friend attempted checking timing, could not see timing mark at indicator. We found petcock valve partially closed, started, and run for break in. Ran fairly well, 2000 rpm for 30 min with 2400 rpm for 5 minutes mid run. After break in idled decent at 650 rpm for 5 to 10 minutes before shut down. Revving during idle period caused stumble.
16.11.06 got almost all bodywork reattached, grill back in as well. frown bumper pan scratched though.
16.11.07 a few of the remaining bolts in. Took for test drive. Stopped at another friends checked timing, he found very far advanced, adjusted as much as possible. Running touch better, but still doesn't like over 3000 to 3200 RPM. Transmission shifting much smoother.
16.11.11 brought truck to Firehall, changed oil & filter MILEAGE 15324, adjusted parking brake. Parked at house for night.
16.11.12 connected tachometer light to switched power, flushed and connected heater, cleaned and reconnected heater fan, moved resistors to under hood temporarily wire tied to fender brace rod. Drilled and wire tied front extinguisher bracket handle.
16.11.19 adjusted dwell to 32 or 33' adjusted timing to about 12' at 1200 RPM, wont idle, hard to start cold.
16.11.26 played with timing, running good 1000 RPM Plus, wont idle, hard to start cold. Found fuel supply seemed inconsistent.
16.11.28 replaced fuel pump. NAPA part. 41169
16.12.03 Friend came over to help son n I check engine adjustments. Relied on my setup of dwell. Re-adjusted timing by checking for TDC (relied on pulley mark) and then rotor position. Once started n warmed up set up timing to about 8' at 700ish RPM. Played with carb adjustments, didn't improve much. Disconnected and plugged vacuum accessories, carb faults got worse - leaks at plate rods and gaskets. Wait for carburetor rebuild.

16.12.04 compared carb on truck with spare, nearly identical. Prepped spare for rebuild.
16.12. Friends helped rebuild original carb. Not spare, son n I installed carb attempted tuning. Set dwell to 33' approx. Adjusted timing to 8 to 12' at 1000rpm roughly. Still won’t idle. Fogged motor for winter.
17.01.01 removed passenger side duals, axle and hub. No issues coming apart. Found original paint and pinstriping on inside of inside rim, and some on outside of same. Found seal & bearing part numbers. Shaft & bearings are in excellent condition.
17.01.06 So loosened hub, I freed driver's side hub. Removed axle, left hub and dual on truck.
17.01.07 Sony & I power washed passenger side drum n inside rim.
17.01-02 cleaned and cleared or polished rear rims, cleaned drums, hubs. Painted axle shaft hubs. Bought new axle seals and hub gaskets. $??? Re&re old hub seals. Reinstalled both hubs, wheels on truck.
17.02.12 Son n I torqued hub nuts and put axle hub seals on both rear axles. Removed front right tire, inspected rim - no issues. Tried removing left front, lug nuts too tight will wait to use air tools. Removed carb.
17.02.13 took carb to old time carb guy to check. Recleaned, adjusted and checked. $100
17.02.20 picked up carb.
17.04.02 Son n I installed carb, drained fuel. Refilled half tank fresh gas. Gross polish on passenger side of fire body (below ladders). Tried firing up truck with boat's battery, it was too flat. Removed ladders for further polishing.
17.04.06 fired truck with different battery. Starts great. Trevor repaired choke cable behind dash, and reconnected, we adjusted sweep. Ran until warm, adjusted low idle to about 750rpm. Tried to take for drive, coughed and sputtered like crazy. Found bubbles coming through fuel filters corresponding with rough running. No fuel leaks found.
17.04.07 rechecked fuel lines after sitting for night, found wet area in steel line. Did some cleanup, removed officers side a pillar spot light for repair.
17.04.13 Son flared line and replaced old, found weak spring clamp and replaced with gear clamp as well. I repaired and cleaned officers side a pillar spot light.
17.04. Tried firing, excellent idle once warm, terrible stumbling upon revving still.
17.04.25 had carb guy come over. Helped check carb installation, rechecked dwell. Found to be 40° adjusted to 32°. Set up to readjust timing. Tried to fire, ignition switch became inoperable. Troubleshoot ignition, fuel. Discussed need for ballast resistor due to points damage. Gave carb guy $80USD($109.13)

17.04.26 ordered new ignition switch, ballast resistor, hood and door bumpers. Bill's Truck Shop $105.99
17.05 file updates missing... installed ballast resistor, bumpers. Friend helped do some diagnosis, found can get it to run great keeping choke on 5°+ . Had carb guy out, explained what we'd found, he took carb back to rejet. I removed choke plate in governor to ensure no parts ingest, and its non-functional. Carb guy came out with carb, found its was jetted at .053", supposed to be .072", he had a .070". Reinstalled carb, truck now running great.
17.05.20ish reconnected wiper vacuum, works OK. Reconnected vacuum for brakes and rear. Brakes are terrific. Rear leaking, found holes in steel line behind drain, removed drains for access, tape repaired, now working great. Truck drives awesome even at higher speeds.
17.05.27 fixed battery opening in floor, almost complete. Cleaned cab, found mouse dirt under seat, washed. Took pictures to plan for seat belts. Found booster line capstans and roller can be stripped and shine, also latches and bulk fill trap door.
17.05.03 Brought truck house. Son and friend stripped paint off rear cross bar - its brass! Started stripping roller and capstans. Walt Vogt dropped of 50' of 1" hose.
17.05.04 Son n I went L & M exhaust got new exhaust parts, $114. Came home and we installed, with son custom welding tailpipe. Took truck in as 'static display' for CANADA 150 parade.
17.06 Dpdt switch, mirrors. $53.08. Stripped booster line roller. Got ends on 50' booster line, Walt dropped off 45' more & put ends on that $20. Polishing fire body passenger side. Mounted heater fan resistors to firewall, installed on off on switch sand wired for high n low fan speed. Son made bracket for tachometer, installed.
17.06.30 added second booster line. Prepped truck for CANADA Day celebrations.
17.07.01 CANADA 150 celebrations! Went to barn to take truck for Burford's "Touch a Truck" and it wouldn't turn over. Son used chunk of battery cable to bypass fender mounted starter solenoid, adjusted negative battery cable and got it running. Great interest and fun at Burford, even had a possible TV show offer. Stopped at home then to St. George for parade. Rain as we got to St. George, very heavy, delayed parade 1/2 hour. Daughter rode inside with me, wife and sons rode on top for parade.
17.07.02 picked up and installed new solenoid, wouldn't work. Tested wiring direct to starter mounted solenoid. Worked great. Cleaned up wiring. Worked on some polishing. Wife got lettering completed on drivers door. Old Smokey Fire Dept Looks so awesome.
17.07.03 Old Smokey Fire Dept now on passenger door as well. Took truck for 40 min drive with fuel stop. New starter wiring works great, truck starts better than ever.
17.07.09 put refinished and new benches on hose bed. Wife and son helped get rear section of headliner in.
17.07.10 met with past coworker , he wworked for King Seagrave mid 1980s in engineering. Bought a cast Bickle Seagrave nameplate, along with others $150. Also received numerous truck photos, sadly none of ours or Cayuga's. Also received King Seagrave ad literature and a copy of the Bickle Seagrave story.
17.07.15 picked up truck last night and cleaned up for today. Son n I took truck to Cayuga for parade, wife and other son followed in pickup. Met friends and Dad. Wife rode in truck with me for parade, rest on benches up top. Back to Brantford after, Son n I into city for $100 job, picked up grooms party on Downing stretch near hospital, took them to Farringdon Church. Stayed for pictures after, then took groomsmen to Sanderson. And back to barn.

17.07.20 wife and son picked up truck for tonights car show since I was away. Car show was rescheduled to next Thursday due to chance of thunderstorms. They took it back Friday.
17.07.23 polished Bickle Seagrave nameplate, blackened inside letters. Wife and I installed on truck, WOW! Replaced passenger side door bumper with homemade lock clip.
17.07.30 Vintage Wheels and Wings at Canadian Warplanes Heritage, got pictures with Stearman, Harvard and LANCASTER! !!!!
17.08 Wife figured out pump panel labelling and history beside panel. Looks awesome!
17.08.26 United Way fundraiser kick off. Old Smokey was the centre piece being pulled!
17.09.10 Fire Cheif's retirement, took his family and him for drives around Scotland
17.10.07 Burford fair and car show
17.10.09 Ruthven car show pictures in Haldimand Press
17.10.15 Pumpkinfest and Station 5 Open House
17.10.21 Artisans Village Halloween
17.10.22 removed tailboard, hitch and pounded out dents
17.11.04 Son and I reworked supports for tailored to remove bow and replace bolts where missing. Replaced tailboard.
17.11.11 oil and filter change partial lube job.
17.12.29 removed bolts holding running boards. Measured spacers needed for boards to fit as original.
18.01.0? Made wooden blocks using scrap oak. Too darn cold to install (-25 +).
18.01.13 rough installed blocks. Need new bolts and to drill to allow proper alignment.
18.01.27 picked up bolts - $15. Got passenger side running boards mostly done (one block needs a shave. Checked drivers side all need a little shave. Removed transmission with son, about 1.25 hrs.
18.01.30 Fellow FF (owns a tranny shop) picked up transmission for repair/rebuild, will let me know.
18.02.02 Friend dropped tranny off all done. New seals and bearings, lower bearing was very rough. Buffed gears including 3rd, which had some heavy burrs. Painted black. Maybe not be perfect but much better and will definitely be quieter according to friend. Will let me know cost in couple weeks after his vacation.
18.02.04 Son and girlfriend and I got transmission reinstalled, less parking brake seal. Need spacer to get it to sit high enough. Nearly finished the changed install of running boards - 1 bracket needs tweak on drivers side, one bolt replaced on passenger side.

Now I'm all caught up.. I'll just need to remember to update here too when I get opportunities to work on or drive Old Smokey!

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.

Just thought I'd drop in here too as have a little spare time. Hope everyone has been doing OK. Still see many familiar names. Other than the obvious pandemic getting in the way its been hell of a ride last few years. Many deaths with family and friends, some med stuff myself keeping me outta work. Fighting my union to help me with employer issues due to med just to name some of the major ones.
Hoping to get some more work done on Old Smokey, but have my daily needing an engine and tranny rebuild. The ol Silverado (Classic 07) is still in excellent condition so much better $$ wise to fix than replace.
Happy bolting everyone!
