For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 486 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2006 Posts: 486 | I have an opportunity to buy a '58 that is in black primer only. The current owner doesn't know how long it has been like this or what's under the primer. It's 4 hours away so I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. Is there an easy way to tell if the truck has rusted under the primer? Will I have to strip it all down to clean it up. Thanks for any advice.

Depends what you want to do with the truck. If you want your paint job to last,id say strip it. | | | | | Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 331 Member | | Member Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 331 | I know lots of people that prefer to drive there vehicles just primed. You don't have to worry about scratching it. What is the difference if it has been painted a color? You still don't Know what is under it. Your best bet is, if it is something you want you are better of to go look and make your decision from there. If everything looks good rough up the surface, spray on a fresh coat of black primer and paint as you normally would | | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 3,458 Extreme Gabster | | Extreme Gabster Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 3,458 | Primer only jobs are almost never done by professionals and usually hide lots of bondo. Take a magnet with you and try to figure out how much metal is left underneath.

Like on a 60-66, I can name the most common spots to check for rust and bondo. Anyway, I found a 59 I like and was thinking about getting that for my boys.

Here is where to look. Front Fender eyebrows, fender tips near doors, bottom of doors, door hinge pockets, steps, cab corners. Those are common. | | | | | Joined: May 2006 Posts: 29 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: May 2006 Posts: 29 | I have used a magnet to check for bondo repair. Just 2cents worth. | | |
