I made it myself. And it isn't working. But I haven't wrecked anything yet either. So can anyone explain in positive terms why it isn't working?

First time attachng a picture - let's see how that goes...

Is that big nut(?) in the center smaller than the hole in the balancer? If not, it can't push on the crank nose to get the balancer off.

Having never had a balancer off before, I'm not sure where the shaft/balancer division is. The shaft does come out flush to the balancer, right? Can anyone tell me the diameter of the shaft? The big nut is about an inch and a half.

There needs to be a threaded jack screw in the center of the puller to push against the end of the crankshaft. The hole in most balancers is about 3/4" in diameter (19MM) so the jackscrew needs to be a 5/8" SAE thread. (16MM-1.5 or so if you're using metric taps and dies).

The end of the crankshaft is about 2" back from the front of the balancer. The diameter of the crankshaft snout is 1 1/4", and the balancer hub is a press fit on the crank. The puller you have made cannot reach the crankshaft snout- - - -it's too big.

Here's an example:

** If there is a "Auto Zone" store anywhere near you they will loan you a harmonic balancer puller at no charge you just leave a deposit & when you return it in good shape you will get a full refund. They also have many other special tools to loan out at no charge.

It's a pretty long haul to an Auto Zone from here. How about I insert a short length of 5/8 inch round steel into the center of the hb? And do the pulling with the existing bolts?

You will only succeed in stripping the bolts that way. Those 3/8-16 threads will stand a lot of straight pull, but not much twist.

that may work. Just go slowly with your bolts, a little on one and then the other, evenly!

I agree with Jerry, leave the small bolts alone, get a larger bolt in the center with proper diameter and spacer, lube well.

If you decide to go that way, at least put studs in the balancer and tighten nuts against your bridge piece. Then when the stud or nut strips, you can replace it and press on. The balancer won't be ruined. It's still a much less than ideal approach.

With fear and trembling I shrugged off Jerry's best advice. But the hb is off and no stripped threads. I have been spraying WD40 on the area all day, I had cleaned the threads and lubed the two bolts. I ended up making two center spacers of different lengths to be able to pull gently over the length of the removal. And I had already inflicted a considerable amount of tension on those threads already while pulling against that big bolt to no purpose, and I tried not to torque on the bolts as hard as I already had on the first failed attempt.

Oh mothers, tell your children,
Not to dooooo what I have done...

its your lucky day is right, lol. Now, do your self a big favor and have the crank snout drilled for threads and use a proper harmonic balancer install tool so you don't fudge up the crank thrust bearing when you go to install the balancer. Makes the job way easier and less chance for messing the motor up.

Another option is to use a heavy slide hammer bolted solidly to the balancer to remove it. You can minimize the possibility of damage to the thrust faces of the main bearing if you wedge a block of wood between the flywheel and the bellhousing in whichever direction you're moving the balancer to keep the load off the flange bearing.

You've lost me now, Jerry. The balancer is removed, Flywheel? Bellhousing? Are we talking about installation already? It's late here. Thanks for the help guys! I am satisfied with this day.

When it's time to drive the balancer back on (if you choose not to thread the crank snout so you can use a press tool) it's a good idea to take the load off the thrust flange on the #3 main bearing by wedging a piece of wood between the flywheel and the bellhousing, or maybe wedging between the crank and the engine block inside the crankcase. That's how Chevy did it on the assembly line when they made the engine. A threaded crank and a jackscrew style balancer installer is a better way to go, however.
