I just received my new wheels from e-trailer. They came in black powder coat. Can they be painted over with a one stage enamel or do they need to be bead blasted first? They are going on my 1950 1 ton GMC and need to match the body color.

I would think they would need some sort of scuffing to let the paint adhere. Good to see another Okie join the group. Welcome!👋🏻

I would put them on and roll with them a few weeks to see if they look OK. This is the trouble with powder coat. Very difficult to know if your paint procedure will stick over time. IMO: Best to get non powder coat wheels or stay with the color. The other problem with powder coat is you can't touch it up. Powder coat is over rated on some components. Very durable on others. I think it's only for trailer queens/show trucks, kitchen appliances, household items, patio furniture and static objects.

The procedure is said to be: scuff up (some say chemical strip) clean, clean, clean, find a primer that sticks, find a paint that sticks.

A regular good paint job on steel wheels, frames, brackets, all the black stuff on our trucks, looks as good as powder coat and can be touched up easily. Good old gloss or semi gloss Rustoleum. 2-3 coats.........(or POR......or EP & Poly...........if that makes a person feel better).

This is not to say there are many who swear by powder coat. But if you ever chip it or have to remove it to weld something, you will swear at it.

Why did you order powder coated rims if you were planning on painting them? Are they hard-to-find rims?

I was faces with the same issue. Rather than paint them. I used Dip it in a can. Painted all four wheels with one can. Doesn’t require any prep except cleaning. Spray on 6 coats. When your tired of that color. Peal it off and spray them again. Watch a YouTube video before you decide. My wheels are blue now but will be going to red in a few weeks.

My friend who does this kind of stuff lectures me all the time about my lack of knowledge about powder coatings says:
"Powder coat is a plastic (Acrylic) so just treat as such for welding and painting."
You can repair powder coat with the new methods out. You put it on mixed with some sort of liquid and fill the scratches or missing area's. Then re-bake it as was done originally.
He has repaired the coating on several parts parts for me.

From what I've seen, they come already powdercoated, and I'm not sure you can get them bare, primed, or painted.
