As one who owns a gun refinishing business I have run into this on occasion. Our solution is to take the piece to a plating shop and have them de-plate it. In other words they reverse the polarity on the electods and instead of plating it de-plates. Not all shops will do this for you so you may have to put on some boyish charm to get it done. Good luck.

When you get your grill back it will look like they've ruined it. It will be black and sootie. Also there will be specks of chrome remainig. These we remove with a media blaster in our case but you can use a hand sander. We media blast the whole thing and then parkerize it. This gives the meatal on the part teeth so paint sticks to it very well. You will have to use high build primer on it but with work it will be as slick as a ribbon. Good luck

One thing that wasnt mentioned,,you have to take the grille apart. Not just out of the truck,,youll have to grind all the rivets off so its in pieces. Anywhere theres two seperate pieces put together,they have to be apart.It helps to take a couple pictures of it first.
Or....theyll charge you to do it.
