I need to make a 3 hr trip to go get my 1966 C60. I have a short but very heavy built, deck above the wheels gooseneck. 16 ft surface with 4 ft dove tail. If I haul this truck on this trailer the rear wheels would be about a foot onto the dove tail. Again, its very heavy built and it must have been an equipment hauling trailer at one time. Does anyone see this as being an issue as far as the rear wheels being one foot onto the dove tail? Thanks for your input. Are the trailer axles, springs and tires rated for the load you'll be carrying? Getting the load moving shouldn't be a problem- - - - -turning and stopping might be. Jerry

'54 GMC 630 w/ 503 gasser, 5 speed, ex fire truck, shortened WB 4', install 8' bed. '55 GMC 370 w/270, 420 4 speed, grain, dump bed truck from ND. Works OK.

So before I left I tried to figure out what it weighed to be sure I was safe. Everyone kept telling me "oh it won't weigh much more than 7-8k". It's a short wheelbase, 13' bed with hoist, etc.
So off I go with an 18ft bumper-pull car hauler trailer (heavy duty trailer with 7k axles, thankfully). Back tires of truck were barely on trailer deck, but it felt wayyyy heavier than what I expected. Put 50lbs of air pressure in my airbags and headed for home. Went over a mountain pass in Idaho about 50mph, (390hp hemi had plenty of power). I run 10ply tires on pickup, 14ply on my trailer, and I'm pretty cautious about things but still, the tail was wagging the dog at times.
Decided to pull into a weigh station out of curiosity. Whole rig weighed 17,800. Station guy chuckled and said that's one hell of a load for a half-ton. I'll never do that again! Apparently that trucked weighs over 10,000lbs. Frame has been reinforced and the bed/hoist is stout as hell. | | | | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 3,436 Moderator | Moderator Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 3,436 | I hauled a 57 2-ton for a fellow member, from central Mo. to central ILL. It had a steel dump bed on it. F-250, power stroke with the 6 speed manual. The trailer is a dual-tandem axle gooseneck, rated for 20,000 lb. The whole rig probably weighed over 20,000 lb. With 3:73 gears, it seemed to pull best at about 75 mph. Fuel mileage dropped down to about 13 mpg though.
I know it was a heavy load, but the truck and trailer handled it well.
