I have one on each side of the bed sides, that I think are spare wheel mounts. Having never seen the sides before carrying them home, I'm not sure. They are bolted on so I can remove them if that's not what they are. I will try to edit the pic down to fit here, I will post it when I get it done. Kind of hard for us to guess what truck your are talking about. 1955.2 ? If so, don't think those sheet metal boxes have anything to do with spare. Bed sides don't even look right. Spare was on outside front, in a fender cutout,

Looks like a homemade or aftermarket spare tire holder. I had my spare mounted inside the box at the front for many years. This was somewhat common as it was such a PITA to crawl under the bed to get the spare.
This was a work truck with added towing equipment, so I figured maybe he had mounted spares (either truck or trailer tires) inside the box. This is my new to me 3200 bed sides with no fender cut out. They do look a little close to the front, but have a place for a lock. Or at least it looks like for a lock. I don't know what you mean bartamos, It is on my 55-2 but bed sides are pretty much the same on great number of years. This is a long bed. And no there isn't a outside the bed mount on mine.
I guess I'm mixed up. Was looking for the rolled over top rail in your pics. I've added wind up carriers from newer Chevy trucks under several 55-59. That's a good alternative. No crawling.

Not a problem, it is a bad picture. The rolls are on the bottom facing the other way. I was just interested in capturing the what ever they are mounts. I'm just making an educated guess on them. Figured someone would have seen them before. My 53 has dual pipes right in the way of a spare tire mount under the truck. But the newer crank up mount is a great idea.
